Massey High School is a co-educational state secondary school in Auckland, New Zealand. It is located on the western edge of the city, giving it a blend of suburban and rural students. With a roll of about 2200 it is currently the 12th largest school in New Zealand. It is currently rated decile 5.
Established in 1969, the school was initially based at Henderson High School until the buildings on the current site at Don Buck Road were completed in 1970. Initially the school had a rural makeup but as the city of Auckland spread to the west and north the school experienced significant roll growth and an increase in suburban students. In order to accommodate this large roll growth the school had to make use of prefabricated class rooms dotted around the campus.
In 2003 the school began a comprehensive campus development programme to bring facilities up to date. This programme commenced with the opening of the Bruce Candy Science Centre, a three story complex with dedicated specialist labs for physics, biology, chemistry, electronics and horticulture. This was followed by the updating and dedication of buildings for each faculty - English, International Languages, Mathematics, Computing and Commerce, The Arts, Social Sciences and Health and Physical Education.
The Jack Adam Gymnasium (the second gymnasium on campus), was the next major new building, and was enhanced by a refurbished swimming pool and multipurpose astroturf. A new technology building was completed in 2005 offering specially designed rooms for wood, fabric and metal technologies as well as automotive studies.
In July 2008 MHS was the venue for the launching of the Ministry of Health's Food and Beverage Classification System for New Zealand schools and early childhood education.
In 2008 the school celebrated its 40th anniversary. Honored with a Massey High School Alumni Award were Jack Adam, Dr Robert Dunlop, Professor Paul Moon, Brigadier Timothy Keating, Linda Vagana and Academy Award winner Philippa Boyens.
On Thursday, 13th October 2011, the school's brand new, purpose built Performing Arts Centre was officially opened by the Prime Minister, the Hon. John Key. Following the establishment of Dance Academy to add to the very active and highly performing Music and Drama departments, the Arts are an area of particular strength for the school.
A highly significant development was the establishment in 2011 of the Auckland West Vocational Academy, a cooperative venture involving other Auckland West secondary schools with Unitec acting as the broker for various tertiary providers. Massey is the Lead School for Auckland West and enables its students to select courses more closely aligned with specific careers. At present available are Electrotechnology, Carpentry, Hospitality, Retail, Business Computing and Automotive. The results have been outstanding in terms of student engagement, retention and achievement.
