Good place to try hangi meals. Chicken, lamb and pork steamed together with cabbage, potatoes and sweet potatoes, topped with breadcrumbs. It's quite different and tasty. Dessert pudding was good too.
The food here was ok. Their lamb hangi wasn't too flavorful, but they're all prepackaged and ready to go. Their burgers are generous with decent flavors, but it fell apart pretty easily which made it really unappealing. We took our order to go, so that may have contributed to the frailty of the burger. The burgers are made once you order, so they're at least fresh. It did take about 10 minutes to get my order done, though. It's worth a shot checking it out, but my personal experience wasn't great.
Staff were very friendly and helped suggest food when we weren't sure what to try. Portions were large and well priced, and the steam pudding was amazing!!
Best place to try Hangi without paying for a show. The owner has a contagious smile and was very kind. He even gave us a free pudding to try! Only wish we were staying in Rotorua longer so we could eat here again! Could not recommend highly enough!
Delicious Maori food! The Chicken and Lamb hangi were delicious, along with the fried bread. Doesn't break the bank either.
Incredibly nice and kind staff. Food is great and prices are very fair. You can get a chicken hangi for 10 bucks, and it's huge. You can also add fried bread for 1 dollar. Pork and Lamb plates are 13. You could even share depending on how hungry you are. Service is quick and you can take away your food. Totally recommend it.
Tried the chicken hangi, it was a bit like a stuffed Thanksgiving meal, very delicious. The chowder was great as well. It's a takeout place, but friendly staff, and definitely a great place to stop for some Maori food.
Amazing friendly staff, great for a chat and happy to help with menu selections. The selections for hangi are pork, lamb, chicken or vegetarian all around the $13 mark. They are all huge potions and the veggies are smokey and delicious. Fried bread is a must have too! Like savoury doughnuts! Best first hangi experience, thanks kiwi kai.
One of the best hangi options, probably in all NZ. As I was traveling across New Zealand, having made it as far south as Bluff and on my way to Cape Reinga I was starting to become disappointed at the possibility of never trying that most famous of Kiwi foods, the hangi. In Rotorua, I didn't much care for going to one of the cultural shows, I knew there'd be a cheaper, very similar and maybe historically heavier one waiting in Waitangi. Having gone off the main street a bit, down an unsuspecting-looking road I was shocked to see the Maori food sign and discovering Kiwi Kai. This is to the date the only hangi I've ever tried so I might not have much reference, but as a Mexican I am familiar with earth-oven lamb in the form of barbacoa and this hangi lamb shared that unmistakable quality. Very soft, like a stew but with LOTS of smokiness, Kiwi Kai's lamb and veggies was everything I could've expected from hangi and that pudding was something else too. The staff that day was happy and seemed genuinely proud of sharing this traditional meal with their customers. If like me you unfortunately haven't been invited to a hangi by a local and you don't care much for the cultural shows, this place is definitely worth going a bit off the main path for. I did eventually make it to Cape Reinga and this was still the only place where I saw hangi for sale. Bear in mind, this food is RICH so you probably want to work up a proper appetite before tackling it.
Staff were great happy an engaging to patrons Food was delicious an served very quickly prices are great value for money the brownies an fry bread were the best I have had. I have never reviewed any restaurants before but people need to know that Kiwi Kai is the place to go thanks an keep up the awesome food and service.
