From the food to the service to the atmosphere, Kika provides you with a full culinary experience that I thought was reserved only for the upmarket areas of a big city. Wanaka is truly blessed to have a restaurant of this calibre in such a small town. Do yourself a favour and if you're staying here make sure you go to Kika. It's as magnificent as that bloody tree.
Great food. We did the chef's choice and the whole meal was fabulous. Great tofu and mushrooms, salmon, goat cheese, and duck.Food: 5/5
As President of the Clean Plate Club, I can highly recommend the fish. The service was above and beyond common courtesy and at the level of truly nice and kind people wanting to host and provide the best quality food and hospitality.Food: 5/5
This is simply superb food – up there with the best of any fine dining we’ve had in NZ and Australia. As is now common at fine dining restaurants, Kika eschews the traditional entrée-main-dessert in favour of sharing plates of a series of small dishes, and then 1 or 2 mains, a side or 2 and a dessert if you still have room. It’s not cheap, but for the quality of the food, service and restaurant setting, it’s well worth it. There’s plenty of veg, vegan and gluten-free options, and the superb staff will help you make the right choices, and make sure you don’t order more than you can eat.
We had a good meal at Kika. The tofu and the fried chicken were delicious! Goat cheese toast was good. The lamb shoulder was very tasty and the meat was soft The cabbage was just ok with nothing special. Broccolini dish was a bit too oily for our taste. Drinks were yummy. Service was great and we thought the staff was very friendly.
To be fair, I think the food might be considered “good enough” compared to other restaurants in this small town. However, if you come from other metropolises like I do, then you might share the same view - there is plenty of space for improvement. Some of the dishes have great combinations of taste and texture, but the others are more like a mix of components from different cultures. There is a lack of connection to make ppl feel it’s an “integrated presentation”. I think that’s something the Chef can work on.
Surprised that such an amazing restaurant is tucked away in the hidden nook and crannies of Wanaka. ALL the piccolos were on point! Each one was better than the next. Produce was fresh, flavours were balanced, and the dishes were not derivative of one another. Actually their main dish was probably the biggest let down the lamb, but still delicious. Two most stunning dishes were the beef tartare and the gnocchi. Honourable mentions include the seared tuna and the venison and beetroot. The mulled wine was also sublime. Pity that we'll only get to eat here once on the trip, but was very glad for the suggestion.
Ordered fried chicken, market fish crudo, beef tartare and hot peach pie with ice cream. Overall, the dishes piccolo were well done and presented beautifully. Particularly liked the fried chicken. Service was also very good. Arrived slightly late but the restaurant kept the table. Staff also served each dish with brief explanation and a smile. Dessert was automatically served without prompting. Place was packed, so reservation in advance will be necessary. Recommended if you are in Wanaka!
Wow!!!! I’m still thinking about this place 5 days later the food was amazing best gnocchi I have had in years. The fried chicken was just crispy, crunchy and delicious. And the deserts so hard to explain how good they are you just gotta go try it
Had an amazing birthday dinner here for my partner. We are vegan - the food was amazing and the service was fast. All the meals were delicious. Highly recommend the "Just Feed Me" option if you have a few people who can help eat it all, otherwise ask for a take out container. It makes a great meal the next day too! Perfect for vegans - so many options. Our daughter had KFC Kika Fried Chicken and Creme Brulee for dessert. Very clean, warm and comfortable restaurant. Highly recommended.
