Story

The Department of Conservation Kauaeranga Visitor Centre is located about 9km out of Thames along the Kauaeranga Valley Road. It serves as the main DOC visitor centre for both the Kauaeranga Valley and the rest of the Coromandel Peninsula.
The visitor centre is filled with informave displays about the history and nature of the valley. We provide information to visitors about the valley and other DOC managed areas of the Peninsula. We also have a gift shop and drinks and ice creams.
The Kauaeranga Valley provides access to the Pinnacles hut (the largest DOC hut in New Zealand), as well as 8 campgrounds, the Kahikatea powered site, 4 backcountry campgrounds and Crosbies hut.
It also has a number of beautiful walks and plenty to see, including our replica Kauri Dam, Hoffmans Pool and the huge Cookson Kauri tree.
Visit the Department of Conservation website for more information about the valley, and for access to our brochure http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-visit/coromandel/coromandel/kauaeranga-valley/

Firstly the building itself is quite contemporary looking. The centre is educational and informative. The maps and models are displayed. They also have souvenirs and craft for sale. You can also buy drinks and ice cream. The staff is nice and friendly.
Great hike with varied experiences. A relatively steady climb to the hut, with a lot of large stone steps. The hut is large and there is gas to cook on. Rooms are shared with approx 20 other people, accommodating 80. Must book. The hike to the summit has a lot of stairs but otherwise relatively not to difficult. The last reach to the summit is a vertical ladder climb. Overall a great hike I completed with my 11 year old son. Will do again and explore further.
Awesome place but just be mindful of the weather. The water level will rise if rain is heavy and will not allow regular cars to go past. Nevertheless, it's an adventure worth taking.
Such a good i-site! Lots of educational things for the kids to look at and touch. Heaps of information about the valley. Inside flushing toilets. Handy bits and pieces in the shop for hiking and camping. Open all year round. Such a great place, mobile phone reception while on site.
Beautiful hiking if you get a good wheater.
What an incredible treasure...right on our back door. Family enjoyed treasure hunts and seeing inside the information centre. The staff were so friendly and accomodating. A definate must
Amazing country site . Just walk and enjoy the rest
We had a quick bathroom stop at the visitor center before heading down the road to the Pinnacles carpark. It was already closed when we arrived so I wasn't able to go inside. The carpark was quite spacious and it looked like there were some small trails nearby. The roads become gravel after passing the visitor center.
Pretty amazing considering how little you pay to rock up on the site. Toilets are much better than expected and regularly cleaned and even have toilet paper. As with most places, you can get bit quite a lot here by mozzies so make sure you bring your spray! Boom Flats are also dog friends so great place to come with fur buddy.
A lovely place to get more information about the various walks in the area and some nice displays about nature and wildlife in the area. We did the pinnacles hike and this was a great starting point to check conditions and weather. They also take any valuables if you are staying at the pinnacles hut for $2 overnight. Lots of parking and can also buy ice cream and last min supplies, including dehydrated food!
