The service at this place was second to none. We came in for breakfast during a busy period and looked around for a place to sit before ordering. We were struggling to find anywhere free when a large group of people walked in and up to the counter in front of us. Thinking that we would not be served quickly due to the crowd, we turned to leave when one of the workers came out and asked “where did those two people go who were looking for a table”. Shocked, we spun around and raised our hands. We were kindly shown to a table upstairs in their gorgeous seating area overlooking the lake. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and my husband ordered the “Brisket Benny”. Both meals were delicious, special mention to the bread that my eggs benny sat on - It was baked in store as are all their baked goods and it was perfectly toasted. The coffee was delicious with Whittakers chocolate on top and served on the side & I thoroughly enjoyed my hot matcha latte. Would absolutely recommend this place! I wish we had’ve tried it for dinner too as it looks very cool at night.
There are places you go for a meal, and then there are places you land in tongs or dusty boots, sore legs, appetite dialled to eleven and Kai Whakapai is firmly the latter.nnParked on Ardmore Street with Lake Wānaka doing its postcard thing just across the road, this is ground zero for the town’s backpacker energy. Skiers, hikers, van lifers, and adventure addicts pile in, all chasing the same reward: cold craft beer and food that actually satisfies after a day in the mountains. It’s loud, relaxed, always packed, and you’ll be lucky to snag a table without a little tactical hovering.nnThe cheeseburger is exactly what you want it to be….juicy, generous, no unnecessary fuss.nThe Haze Burger steals the show: rich, savoury, and infused with that malty depth that feels tailor made for the tap list. It’s the kind of burger you remember halfway back to Australia.nnThen there’s the Salvhicha Martinez chorizo, jalapeno and red pepper pizza…..smoky, spicy, and built for sharing over pints you didn’t plan on ordering but absolutely will.nnDespite the chaos, service stays upbeat and efficient, proof they know exactly who they are and who they serve.nnKai Whakapai isn’t trying to be fancy. It’s trying to be good and in Wānaka, that’s exactly what matters.
Good food and a great vibe. The staff were friendly and welcoming.nnLocated right on the corner by the lakeside, so it’s hard to miss. Perfect spot for breakfast.
Great menu that isn’t your stock standard. Boyfriend had the beef brisket which he LOVED. Coffee was delicious, service was so fast considering the place was packed. Will come back for a craft beer! Only downside is the limited space to lineup to order when it’s busy which crowds around some of the smaller tables inside but can’t help a busy spot! Was keen on the cold press juice but unfortunately $12 is a bit steep! Great that had heaps of other affordable juice options.
Kai Whakapai is centrally located in the town. Simple to park. The restaurant is more of pub/fast food establishment although I did get to order an open faced steak sandwich. Steak was good as was the feta , fruit salad. Nothing stands out as a strong attribute that differentiates this place from other places. The food was good, service was quick and the prices were fair. I would recommend.
