This is a good places. Prices have definitely gone up but then this is post Covid era.nFood is tasty and service is acceptable. It’s a busy place so be prepared to wait.nI had smashed avocado with salmon 29$ no eggs. Extra 3$ for eggs long black was 4.5$znServing size is medium.nn——————nnJan 2025nnHad their nacho burger. 26$ this was disappointing .. the patty was not juicy and extremely hard. Overall 1/5 for taste and quality. Chips were ample though.
On day we visited there were no vegan or dairy free options in sweet or savory goods and no vegetarian pie or quiche option. A few different vegetarian sandwiches, so if you are vege and ok with dairy, should be well catered for. Not so much if vegan or vege + dairy free. We got a vege club sandwich nice but could do with less dressing as it made the bread soggy in places, apple turnover good, not too sweet, lots of filling, and plain focaccia. Environment is very busy, loud, and bright, would not want to eat in an someone with sensory sensitivities. We chose to sit in sun at park right beside the bakery. Overall good but would not return as someone who is vege + dairy free.
After being told it was about a 20-25min wait on meals coz busy i waited pretty much 40mins for the food. That was all fine as they are busy however. After waiting that long and only to be served rock solid hard boiled eggs on a benedict. This was the worst experience i had. Could only eat half and i was just too pissed to enjoy it and left.nnIt was just a sad experience.
Janus Bakkerij, a beloved fixture in Lower Hutt, is more than just a bakery; it's a living piece of local history. Established in the 1950s by Joe Janus Senior, a highly decorated pastry cook from Holland, the bakery brought the fine European tradition of baking to the region. It's not just a local bakery but a piece of history, and according to their website, upholding a family tradition that dates back many generations to the days when the Janus family lived in Holland.nnJoe introduced many innovations into the local market, most notably in the 60's when Janus was the first bakery in the country to produce sliced, wrapped bread. For 25 years, the bakery, as we know it on High Street, was run by Joseph and Angela Janus, and the family name became synonymous with quality fresh bread throughout the lower half of the North Island. Now under the ownership of Arna and Jason Wnek since 2022, Janus Bakkerij continues to be a popular hub for both locals and visitors. This current management is carrying on the foundation of a modern bakery and eatery at 700 High Street and aims to do so for many years to come.nnOn this visit, the coffee and my little sweet treats were spot on. I have found their coffee to be usually good, and I can vouch for the increasing variety of cookies and cakes that they offer. However, it’s worth noting that consistency can sometimes be a challenge - they might occasionally drop the ball and deliver a less-than-perfect cup. Service can also vary, so it’s best to approach your visit with the understanding that it might not be uniform every time.nnBeyond the cafe fare, Janus Bakkerij remains a go-to for fantastic breads and custom birthday cakes. The atmosphere here is truly buzzy and uplifting, the kind of lively energy you'd expect from a well-loved community hub, though some might find it a tad noisy. The bakery also has outdoor seating, which is a definite bonus on a warm day.nnOverall, Janus Bakkerij remains a great option in Lower Hutt, blending its historical roots with a modern offering, just be prepared for the possible inconsistencies in service, which is well worth it when everything is right.
If you’re after great coffee and a huge variety of cabinet choices, this is the place to be! From sandwiches, to salads, savoury, sweet desserts etc. There is also a menu you can order from and the place is often bustling so best to book if you have a few going.
