Lovely area on the beach, with signs and driftwood art as there is a driftwood arts competition on the beach between these days until the 26th of January. As you can see lovely black beach but quite cold and relatively dangerous point of view of currents and riptides. Would recommend supervision for children and caution for even skilled adults. Lovely and easy parking.
The Hokitika Beach Sign is such a cool and iconic landmark. Made from driftwood, it looks amazing against the backdrop of the sea and sky. Great place for photos, a short walk, or just enjoying the sound of the waves. Definitely worth stopping by!
Beautiful beach and nice a walk way along the beach. We had lunch at one of the restaurants with a beach and sea view. Great food and great vibes
Hokitika’s beach is rugged and beautiful, lined with rocks, crashing waves, and plenty of driftwood shaped by the sea. The highlight is the famous “HOKITIKA” driftwood sign, a creative landmark and a must-stop photo spot.nnWalking along the sand, you’ll find driftwood scattered everywhere and may even try spotting pounamu greenstone, treasured by the Māori as a protective stone. It feels like a small treasure hunt, adding charm to the stroll. We also noticed locals arranging wood and stones into messages like “HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025,” giving the beach a creative, personal touch.nnThe best moment comes at Sunset Point, where people gather to watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea. The driftwood letters glow golden, the sky turns deep orange, and the atmosphere feels calm yet unforgettable. A must-visit stop on New Zealand’s West Coast.
If you are staying in Hokitika, it is definitely worth it to have a stroll at this beautiful long beach. Especially around sunset is a great time to come here as this beach is orientated to the west. The beach is very clean. The sign of Hokitika in wooden sticks is super iconic.
