The discipline methods are good usually, better than other schools that i think lack discipline completely. However my teacher made me go stand facing the corner of the classroom for 15 minutes straight for talking at the wrong time. Then gave me a faculty detention like it wasnt enough. Sometimes i question how effective it really is to go over the top like that. But anyway, im an international student and i have never had as great of an experience in education as i have here at Hamilton Boys. I would highly recommend this school for international fee-payer students, especially if you are planning to do elite sport. There are certain privileges you get as a fee-payer ive noticed. So despite the harsh uniform rules and, some teachers getting a bit crazy with their discipline methods, im rating it a 4 because of the awesome time ive had.
Excellent High School. As an old boy of your school I thought I'd write a review given that during my youth I had some of the best experiences of my life at Hamilton Boys' High School. Thanks :
Schools stuck back in the 1900s. Values sport and appearance more than education, if you wish to send your son to a school based on performing well academically, this isn’t the right school for you. For instance, at HBHS, where the focus often seems misplaced compared to other institutions nationwide offering diverse curriculums like IGSCE and IB. Most students are limited to NCEA; However, there's a catch. HBHS adopts a selective approach, cherry-picking students based on ranks and recommendations from teachers, leaving little room for academic exploration unless you're among the top 50 performers. On the other hand, numerous other schools offer better NCEA courses with increased no. of internal credits. At this current time 2023, NCEA level 2 and 3 offer 2 internal and 3 external papers, limiting the chances of endorsement. Other schools around Hamilton offer more credits distributed amongst core subjects. I firmly believe that students should have the autonomy to choose their educational path, just as students in many other schools do. However, HBHS appears reluctant to expand its offerings beyond its exclusive invitational-based IGSCE program, citing a shortage of qualified staff. This limitation stifles student choice and potential, denying them the opportunity to thrive in their preferred curriculum.nnThe uniform and presentation standards at HBHS are not only outdated but also draconian, seemingly designed to enforce conformity to a degree that’s both unnecessary and counterproductive. These regulations—such as hair being cut at or above the hairline, off the ears, collar, and face, and prohibited from being braided, dyed, waxed, or styled—reflect a rigid adherence to an antiquated notion of discipline. This obsessive focus on appearance mirrors rules from nearly a century ago when such regulations were perhaps more relevant to the uniformity required in industrial workplaces. n addition, the prohibition of any graffiti on bags, pencil cases, books, or clothing stifles individual expression and creativity, reinforcing a culture of uniformity rather than encouraging personal growth and self-expression. The requirement for socks to be worn to the knees with garters while wearing shorts is a prime example of how these rules go beyond practicality into the realm of absurdity. Such stringent standards can make students feel like they are being prepared for a factory assembly line rather than an environment conducive to learning and personal development.nnHonestly, the idea that HBHS’s strict rules are supposed to give us discipline and turn us into men is kind of a joke. Coming from an old boy like myself, once you leave, you quickly realize how much freedom you have outside those walls. All the rules about how our hair has to be cut, no graffiti allowed, and socks with garters just seem way over the top.nWhen you’re out in the real world, it’s like a whole new level of freedom, and those old-school rules start to feel unnecessary. The real world values creativity and personal expression a lot more than sticking to outdated dress codes. These rules might make it seem like they’re teaching us discipline, but they just end up feeling like they’re holding us back.nnNow I have some general information about the school: Toilets at HBHS are horrendous during intervals, don’t be surprised to see students urinating on sinks rather than the actual toilets which has happened before. Perhaps some poo on the walls will seal the deal with the full HBHS toilet experience.nnBeware of a nasty bald female I.T. teacher unqualified and racist towards specific students. On the first day of school, she even flipped off a student, honestly some very unprofessional and inappropriate behavior coming from a teacher. P.S. Mr SV is the Goat for I.T
mr silvester's the goat, the goat. that mullet it teacher takes off 2 stars though how is it possible for her to always be in a bad mood.
Would give 5 stars but due to lack of handball courts, I’m going to sadly rate this place a 1/5 stars. As a handball lover I feel this school lacks the ability of allowing boys to compete and experience the sport handball. Adding Send photo proof
