A great place to stay for the Summer Concert series.nnThe back rooms across from the main building were mainly concert goers - so the majority didn't mind the slightly late nights, and slight noise.nnThere are enough communal spaces upstairs and downstairs, and you got to know the people there.nnOnly a short walk into town, means you can leave the car parked up for most of your stay, and very close to the Amphitheater - concert venue.nnPlenty of parking, and unlike Welly - you can park on the grass outside, near the footpath, which many of us did.nnPerhaps the only negative was the lack of airflow in the rooms, as quite a few said they were stuffy - even with the small front and back windows open.
Paid $209 a night for a private room in thus hostel. Worst room I've had in nz. I believe they are price gouging because we were here when Iron Man is on and we had no interest in this event.nRoom had 2 twin beds and a narrow channel between them.nEnsuite had a mini basin you'd be lucky to get your hands in there. No shelf anywhere. I slept with my luggage on top of me.nFridge is in shared kitchen. You'd be lucky to squeeze your car on sight.nStay away
Room was tidy. But the noise at night was ridiculous. We were in room 26 under the kitchen. 11pm sounded like a party was happening upstairs. Could not get hold of anyone to discuss noise control. OK for 1 night. Take ear plugs.
I am extremely disappointed with my stay at this hostel. There was a fly infestation throughout the entire place — in the kitchen, bathrooms, and even the rooms. Both alive and dead flies were everywhere, including on the dishes. It was absolutely disgusting. To make matters worse, there were no tea towels provided to clean or dry anything.nnOn the second day, the staff did spray to kill the flies, but they didn’t bother to clean up the mess of dead flies afterward. The kitchen was filthy, with grease and grime everywhere, and the cushions on the couch had visible stains. The overall cleanliness was appalling, and I would not recommend staying here unless you’re okay with a lack of hygiene and poor upkeep. Truly an unpleasant experience.nnTo make matters worse, the other building attached to the reception was so much nicer, which is honestly ridiculous considering all rooms cost the same. It’s baffling that such a stark contrast exists within the same hostel chain. This was the fourth Haka Hostel we stayed at during our trip around New Zealand, and the difference in quality between this one and the others was shocking. The standard here was far below what we had come to expect from the brand, and it really does a disservice to Haka’s reputation.nnThe other locations were well-maintained, clean, and comfortable, which made this experience feel even more disappointing. It’s frustrating to see such a drop in standards, especially when you're paying the same rate. This hostel definitely needs a major overhaul in terms of cleanliness and maintenance if it wants to maintain its reputation.
Unfortunately quiet hours of 10pm to 7am were not well enforced and people were loud until late, and returning nights out. The walls are super thin too so can hear everything from adjacent rooms and shared areas. Would not recommend staying here if you're looking for peace and quiet...nnRoom was basic but comfortable enough, really think there should be fans provided - it was very hot and the windows were large so didn't feel particularly comfortable leaving them open all night.nnHowever a super good location, walkable distance to the town centre and lake, seemed like a lot of activities run e.g. Tongariro crossing run from the hostel.
