About

Flock Hill Station was established in 1857

Story

Flock Hill Station was established in 1857 as part of the Craigieburn run and was originally farmed by Joseph Hawdon a wealthy immgrant from Australia. In 1865 he established a hotel somewhere between Flock Hill Station of today and Lake Pearson after the West Coast road was first opened. Sadly, it burnt down soon after opening and was quickly rebuilt. The hotel was ultimately unsuccessful and later used as the Flock Hill Station Managers house.

Hawdon sold Craigieburn in 1867 and the run then changed hands several times until the lease was reviewed in 1917. At this time the Craigieburn Run was divided into 3 blocks and James Milliken took over 2 of them, naming his farm Flock Hill after the limestone formations on the hills near Cave Stream, as some say that from a distance they resemble of flock of sheep on the hill.

Milliken farmed Flock Hill until 1948 when Gerald and Doreen Urquhart took over. The Urquhart's built the deer unit and started the accommodation complex as it is today.

I've stayed at a few luxury lodges and this one is just incredible. The scenery and activities are incredible. Chef Craig Martin is so talented and the food is the best I've had in New Zealand. Nearby activities: SUP, ebikes, beautiful hikes. Food & drinks: The room includes a private chef. Very talented. I wanted to take him home with me.
Lovely place for an outdoor wedding. Quiet, sheltered and peaceful. Great food at the reception, several dishes picked over for their ingredients. However the reception was held in a wool shed that still smelled quite strongly. Would have appreciated a scented candle or stronger clean out ahead of time.
Nice location. Terrible service. No food options available as advertised & most expensive wi-fi in the world!
Firstly, there were many flies here. So many that it was irritating and annoying and disruptive for us. Secondly there was absolutely no WiFi and it was literally a remote and far off place. Thirdly, amenities was really bad, there was hardly any pots and pans and the necessary kitchen items for cooking and worse still, when we were there, the restaurant was closed! No supermarkets nearby as well. Literally a dead location. The only saving grace were the beautiful horses and a cute duck that distracted us from our misery. Bed were comfortable. The water heater was a bit weird too, water either too cold or too cold. Wouldn't stay here again.
I had a comfortable stay in one of the cabins. It was very spacious and well-maintained with a dated but serviceable kitchen. It has TV and great scenery, but for free Wi-Fi you'll need to travel up the road to the cafe in Arthur's Pass. Certainly a great value for anyone looking to upgrade from camping while bouldering around Castle Hill for a few days.
we stayed at flock hill station for a wedding. Staying at shearers-quarter-backpackers which was old/noisy and ready for some serious rework. Also had a simple bbq for which we had to pay 100dollar!! 2nights in a cheap/old cot and a simple BBQ was charged at 270dollar which was in our opinion pretty outragious for what we got. The other facilities were very nice and were a big contrast wrt what we got although the other facilities were more expensive the price quality ration fot he shearers-quarter was pretty bad. View and surrounding were beautifull!
The internet has vastly improved from the 2Mbps during my last stay. That's a little regrettable really, as this was the perfect place to escape when the Internet was so impractical. Finally, on this visit, I've been able to bring my family with me and share with them the amazement of this venue. No one was able to meet us as we arrived, but I knew where to go and our cottage was warm and sorted for us when we turned up. Would be nice to get to experience the restaurant one day but with such infrequent visits I guess it's difficult to employ necessary staff so far from civilisation as you'd expect in a small town or city. Horses were a great joy to the young ones as well as the ice on the little garden lake. My wife meanwhile asks why we are not staying here longer! We shall be back.
Rooms clean, warm and comfortable. Equipment in kitchen not great - zip not working, cook top rings not hot. Beautiful location.
Looks a great place to stay if you can find anyone to let you in. Called at lunchtime and the place was locked , so i dialled 3 as requested on the locked door, spoke to a chap and asked him if they were opening and he said "no", one word answer
Beautiful landscape, amazing facilities. Perfect place for a getaway to explore the high country. Whole heatedly recommended!
