We dined at the Duke of Marlborough whilst on our honeymoon. We absolutely loved our experience!! We were given a complimentary bubbles for our special occasion. The food and beverages were incredible. Our waiter was humorous, light hearted and cared for us so well. Easily the BEST restaurant experience we’ve ever had. Recommend to everyone and will definitely be back!!
We had high hopes for this restaurant as we had come a long way, but unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We were initially seated right next to the band, where the music was overwhelmingly loud, and the only alternative offered was a couch, and while it wasn’t ideal, we were happy to accommodate and move there.nnWhat really ruined the evening was the poor service. After finishing our entrées, I asked a different waiter if I could order another Coke. He rudely responded, “Go order at the counter.” This comment completely threw us off. A few minutes later, the same waiter was happy to give the couple beside us an in-depth description of their dishes, yet couldn’t be bothered to take a drink order for me. It felt like he didn’t want to serve me, and frankly, I can’t ignore the possibility that this was racially motivated. The waiter an older white man seemed very comfortable serving the elderly white couple beside us.nnWe were so put off by the treatment that we asked for our mains in takeaway containers and left. When I got home, I opened up my $50 steak, which looked and tasted mediocre at best, definitely not worth the price, as you can see from the photo.nnThis experience was upsetting and left a sour taste in our mouths. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone, especially if you value good service or expect to be treated with respect.
We had a very enjoyable stay. There was a minor issue that was resolved instantly which I was surprised and grateful for as those things can go either of 2 ways.nThe rooms are scrupulously clean, the staff are fantastic, especially Jeanette who went out of her way to make our stay memorable. Fantastic location for breakfast and dinner with spectacular views over the water. Food and drink selection at the restaurant are excellent. We had dinner there the first night and breakfast every day. Cannot recommend The Duke highly enough you will not be disappointed if you are fortunate enough to get to the Bay of Islands area and are looking for outstanding accommodation and sevice
We have been going to the Duke for years and have always enjoyed our meals there, however, in recent months we have not enjoyed the meals as we used to. We find the menu has changed so much to incorporate too many fried foods, like fried bread, chips with fish were so full of oil I believe these were fried three times and the lack of fresh green salads. The menu lacked healthy options. I’m really sorry, but we won’t be rushing back in a hurry,
perfect dining experience. the food was delicious and the cocktails were amazing. There was so much history to this place too which we found really surprising and remarkable. We actually got stuck at Russel as we missed the last ferry and the restaurant manager was so generous and kind in helping us find a solution and getting us back to paihia which we did eventually. Def will be back again:
