Capers used to be one of our favourite cafes in the north island with top notch food and coffee. Always looking forward to visiting here every time we come to Rotorua. But this time the quality and flavour of food has dropped a little. My salmon bagel came with a piece of lemon that was dried and full of seeds, probably has been pre-cut for a while. And the creamy mushroom was way too oily.
We were traveling through Rotorua and staying there for three nights. We went to Capers for breakfast one day and dinner for another. Service was quick and kid-friendly - My 4-y.o. worked up his courage to ask the staff for some crayons after seeing other kids got them. They were so lovely and patient with him and tried to get him to repeat himself a couple of times probably because of his American accent lol.nnFor breakfast, we got the granola, the big breakfast, and the salmon bagel; all were excellent and of generous portions. For dinner, we got the lamb shank, the fish burger & chips the fish special of the day, and the tuscan chicken fettucine. All were great as well.nnWe loved the vibe of the place; it felt like a beloved local joint. The table next to us at dinner was hosting a local meetup for English learners. We also saw two young girls returning plates to the staff from probably their house or somewhere nearby.
Great food, quick service. It has a cute little store inside as well.nnI got the eggs benedict which claimed to be the best in the city. It was great but, that's a bold claim as I've had 5 others around Rotoura and they were all eggcellent.nnWe also ordered Avacado Bagel. It was great but difficult to eat, it was just huge. Tangy with a slight kick.
Food and service were good but once you get everything no one comes to check up on you or your order. It does get very busy, with a long line to order and a long wait times for food, so please be patient if you’re planning to come here.nnApart from the above, the only let down I had was that I ordered the salmon bagel and found it a bit misleading. Nowhere does it mention that it’s deconstructed, and the sample photos on the Capers Instagram page look quite different to what I received. The chilli egg scramble wasn’t really a chilli scramble, it was just scrambled eggs with a bowl of sweet chilli sauce on the side. I also didn’t receive the fresh tomato.nnStaff are helpful and friendly. I did come 2 days in a row and can see they have a good selection of options on the menu. Just a bit annoyed with the order today. Didn’t get a chance to pass on feedback as the line to speak with someone was very long and had other things booked in for the day.nnJust sharing this as a heads-up for others to be patient and what to expect but would definitely come backnnThanks team!
This place is amazing!nWe headed in at the start of our long weekend in Rotorua and fell in love!nWe then head breakfast here every morning of our trip!nAnd of course we had to take some of those heavenly treats for the afternoon.nI loved that the menu clearly advised allergens!nThe vegetarian big breakfast was immense and filled me up into dinner!nI also take enjoyed the feijoa rice porridge - what a neat choice to have.nThe staff were amazing. The place gets packed so me sure to head in early to get your spot.nGreat coffee too nnThis will be one of those places I keep coming back to every time I'm in Rotorua
