The Botanical Society of Otago is for anyone interested in botany, especially native plants and the natural environment of Otago. We aim to encourage, educate and advise through regular, informative talks, expert-led fieldtrips and newsletters.
Every year, we aim to have at least ten meetings/talks with guest speakers (February to November), eleven field trips (February to December), produce three or four newsletters and organise a photographic competition. Biennially we hold the Audrey Eagle drawing competition.
We continue to foster tertiary student interest in botany and support the University of Otago, Department of Botany, Student Colloquium. We contribute to community initiatives, like workshops, and provide species lists for specific community projects.
We are entirely dependent on volunteers. We have a special relationship with the University of Otago, in particular its Department of Botany, which provides a room for committee meetings and space for archives, and its Department of Zoology, which where we have our public meetings and talks. We co-operate with the Dunedin Botanic Garden about raising community awareness of what we have to offer.
