Blue River Baby is a New Zealand six-piece originals band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, funk, reggae, psychedelic rock, ska, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues.
Originally formed in 2016 the bands members are a drawn from current and ex members from Whole Lotta Led, My Golden Soul, Julie Lamb Band, Roger Fox, The Deville Brothers, & Circa Improvisors.
Recognised for their musicianship & improvisational ability, they were invited to play as live support in the 2017 International Comedy Festival finals show for Theater sports at Circa theatre, Jamming live alongside the actors.
Ivy Padilla joined as lead singer in early October 2017.
Two weeks later on the 12th of October 2017 in search of venues to play they took a selection of originals, "Closer", "You Go" , "Walk of Shame" and " Blackyard Town" to the Wellington heats of the National Battle of the Bands at Valhalla which saw them winning through to a Semi final on the 4th of November.
At the 4th of November Semi final at Valhalla they introduced "Crazy Town" and updated versions of "Closer" , "Walk of Shame" and "Blackyard town" This performance lifted them on to the Wellington Regional finals at San Fran on Cuba street on December 1st .
On December 1st after further working on their songs they performed
"Crazy Town", "Closer" , "Walk of Shame" , and "Blackyard Town" this performance saw them qualify through to the National Battle of the Bands NZ Final held over the weekend of the 16th and 17th of December 2017
At the NZ National Battle of the Bands finals they drew a spot on the Sunday evening, bringing out " Crazy Town", "Closer", "Walk of Shame" and "Blackyard Town"
They were awarded 3rd place on the night and won a number of accolades including "best drummer for Jason Hotton" and invites to play venues and festivals into 2018.
