What a place to lunch and relax, food was amazing, views are amazing, service was amazing. Not a bad drive out from chch, easily doable in a day, can hop over to other vineyards in the area while you’re at it. We had a 3 year old with us, the cellar door and restaurant very accomodating for children, he had quite a bit of time exploring the vineyards.
We arrived at Black Estate Water wines by bike and were served delicious food by gracious staff. We drunk the wine from the block directly in front of us. World class food and location.
Wow! 5 stars for Black Estate. Visited a couple of weeks ago, driving up driveway, struck by modern sleek building that hosts restaurant and B & B below. Blown away by outstanding views, could be in Tuscany! Greeted by very friendly staff on arrival. Was seated overlooking spectacular vista from restaurant. As was mid afternoon, so a drink and a something small to eat was all we wanted. Imbibed in a delicious Rose, with crusty bread generous serving. Yum! Induldged in a slice of scrumptious Lemon Meringue pie and filtered coffee. A very pleasant way to spend an afternoon and a must for anyone wanting a taste of what North Canterbury has to offer. Black Estate has a point of difference from other wineries in area and well worth checking out.
Fantastic place just off the highway. Decided to make a short detour for lunch but stayed for more than an hour. Highly recommend the lamb, butterfly butter fish and Roasted potatoes. Lamb was juicy, tender and flavourful but the fish was the highlight of the day. Thick fillet topped with seasoned greens and immaculate butter sauce that fills your pallete with one bite but does not leave you overwhelmed. There are some bones within but it's worth the effort. Potatoes were crispy and thick and lightly seasoned, accompanied by a delectable citrus mash of sorts. Looks plain but the flavour begged to differ. Wine tasting was superb with an informative and passionate sharing of up to 6 wines with a spittoon tasting for drivers who can't resist. Ended up buying 3 bottles myself. A little pricey with mains priced around $50-70 but I guess you can't put a price on the experience.
Absolutely stunning service. Pen and her team were incredibly accommodating to our requests, we felt so welcome and valued. The wine and food were out of this world. Already planning our next trip back!
Food is good, prices are average. Wine tasting cost lit bit too much for 6 sips of wines. I would suggest to have a bite and one white one red rather than the wine tasting.
$75 for a steak, just a plain steak, nothing else on the plate, $45 for a we tasting of 5 wines. as a local who has dined at black estate many times ,found the prices post covid ridiculous ..For $75 I can go to Clink in Sumner and have a 5 course meal...
Visited for lunch. Lovely location. Both wine and food were definitely disappointing however. Rose wine and fish main course. I won't be returning.
Genuinely surprised to find this family owned local winery. I love the slightly fusion food with the specially prepared sauces. The scenery is open and relaxing. Do try out the Riesling and Pinot Noir; I personally like them the best. The venison entree is stunning and so is the seasonal vege. All in all, this restaurant restored my faith in fine dining around the Canterbury area. Lastly but not the least, the staff are really bubbly and helpful. Thank you!
A jewel wine tasting restaurant located up the hill and therefore the restaurant seats have great views over the surroundings. The restaurant is pricey, as well as another wine tasting restaurant that we first visited but than discarded. As vegetarians this restaurant has a few options. The portions are quite small for lunch and rather expensive. We ordered a roasted beetroot dish, cucumber salad and fried potatoes. The cucumber salad was nice refreshing with a light vinaigrette sauce and fruits. The beetroot dish was much heavier. The potatoes were fine and helped to give some substance to the lunch. We finished with the elderflower sorbet which was delicious and that we could share as the portion was normal. As wine we had selected the dry 2019 riesling and their more sweeter 2014 riesling. The wines were great to drink as apperatif but were not a good match with the food and lost taste. The service was personal and excellent, but presenting the meals took some time. Overall rating only 3 stars due to the rather too small lunch portions and the rather high price for what was offered, and failing to recommend matching wines with the food selected.
