there’s 2 ways to walk to the cave; the track on the right side of the field is a bit rocky and thin and has some steep sections. however the track on the left side is wider and smoother, with gradual steps along the way, so if you want an easier walk i’d recommend following the trail on the left. the cave at the end looks pretty cool!
Pretty sweet views when you get up there, however I do have to say that starting the trek from the right side of the field when facing the cave was a pretty bad decision on my part. That part of the trek has is actually a little dangerous. Despite it being a loop trail, I don't recommend using the trail on the right side
Fantastic walk! About 1 to 2 km long up a moderately steep track. Worth a detour to see the cave.nnThe cave itself is large but not deep 10meters and provides a great view over the Sumner area!
One of Christchurch's hidden gem of a walk, adequate car parking by the school in the park, walk towards the valley on the grass pitches towards the gate you can then choose the Eastenders Loop or the right hand Bartley Cave track, during the winter the right hand track can get muddy and the elevation gain is quite steep - good footwear is required here.the left hand path - Eastenders Loop is a proper trail and well looked after and perhaps easier for smaller kids. Once at the cave climb the wooden staircase for excellent views over Sumner and New Brighton.
Took the track to the left. It was a beautiful but intense walk up being disabled and managing to get to the top and back was just amazing, and I was so proud I made it. I wanted to take more pictures but it was rather busy.
