This is a must visit place if you are in Dunedin. This street is not only steep, but also pretty long as well. The views are good both from the top as well as the bottom. You can find free street parking on the bottom of this street. On the top you can only go to your left through the road, however there is some open space available on the right which you can utilize to make a U turn or reverse back carefully to drive down the street. Please do be mindful that this is an active street in a residential neighborhood so there will be active moving traffic, while people are also living on this street. Take pictures responsibly and keep your talking volumes to a respectful level. Public toilets are on the bottom of street, while there is a water fountain at the top, next to the bench behind which a very nice mural has been pained.
Baldwin Street definitely a very steep street, makes for a great cardio workout. If you’re visiting Dunedin it’s somewhere worth a visit just to experience.nnIf you have a heart condition I’d most probably recommend giving it a miss. Standing at the top in the middle of the road isn’t a good idea if you have height issues either.nnGlad I did it.
It is indeed steep but the name is a bit misleading. It’s not the steepest inclining road section, but the street with the steepest average incline in total. This means that while this street is short and quite steep, it will have a steepest average than longer streets with a short section of steepest incline. So yes, there is steeper in the world but it makes for a good memory to say you’ve climbed the steepest street :
Baldwin Street in Dunedin is a fascinating place to visit, especially if you’re in the area. If you have your own transport, it’s an easy drive to get there. Be sure to park your car outside and walk up the street. Driving up the street is not only unenjoyable but also a bit risky.nnThere is a café one street over if you need a break, and several take-away options and other cafés nearby to explore in the morning. The area is quite popular, with many tourists and tours. The street is actually steeper than it appears, becoming more challenging as you walk up. It’s a great viewpoint and a fun challenge to walk up and take a photo.
I took on the challenge of running to the top of the street, as hill training is a regular part of my running schedule. I tried sprinting and racing my son, but I only made it about 200 meters before giving up—the gradient is insane! Everyone had a good laugh watching us struggle up the hill. That said, the view from the top is absolutely stunning, and I highly recommend a quick visit.
