This is a must visit place if you are in Dunedin. This street is not only steep, but also pretty long as well. The views are good both from the top as well as the bottom. You can find free street parking on the bottom of this street. On the top you can only go to your left through the road, however there is some open space available on the right which you can utilize to make a U turn or reverse back carefully to drive down the street. Please do be mindful that this is an active street in a residential neighborhood so there will be active moving traffic, while people are also living on this street. Take pictures responsibly and keep your talking volumes to a respectful level. Public toilets are on the bottom of street, while there is a water fountain at the top, next to the bench behind which a very nice mural has been pained.
I took on the challenge of running to the top of the street, as hill training is a regular part of my running schedule. I tried sprinting and racing my son, but I only made it about 200 meters before giving up—the gradient is insane! Everyone had a good laugh watching us struggle up the hill. That said, the view from the top is absolutely stunning, and I highly recommend a quick visit.
An incredible experience visiting Baldwin Street, the world’s steepest street! The climb is definitely a workout, but the views at the top are absolutely worth it. It’s such a unique spot, perfect for fun photos and a bit of a challenge. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, and don’t forget to check out the local cafes nearby for a well-deserved treat after the climb. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Dunedin!
I didn't want to walk it but my husband went for the climb. It was very difficult to do a U turn in your car at this street because of how steep it was as we didn't feel comfortable driving up it even though others did. The photos doesn't really show how steep it actually is. You have to see it to believe it.nThe driveways of all the houses I could see were very difficult to get in and out of.nWe parked at the bottom of the hill. We managed to park without a problem, but there is no parking for this particular sight to see as it is a suburban street.
I highly recommend getting this beautiful and insightful book by Ian Dougherty - we met the author of this book on the bottom of the street. We exchanged conversations about the street and also the Mueller Hut tramping route.nYou will see many people attempting to take the “best” photo in the street and leave like what you’d see at the Pisa Tower in Italy, without knowing anything about the street itself.nnDo yourself a favour and get this book, learn about the history etc. Don’t be like the majority of the superficial tourists.
