Ashburton Salvation Army Corps
….. Before Coming to Church.
You might be thinking about coming to church sometime, but it can be daunting if you’re not used to it. Here are 10 things you need to know about The Salvation Army in Ashburton:
1. It’s not just for good people: The whole point of Christianity is than none of us are good enough to make it on our own. If you are feeling like you need some support and help in life, then get yourself to our church.
2. You don’t have to wear your Sunday best: Nowadays most people don’t dress up for church - Just wear what you feel comfortable in.
3. You don’t have to know what to do: Most churches have a fairly similar structure like: songs notices, donations and a talk for about 20-30 minutes. Just follow the crowd and you will be fine.
4. Singing out of tune is a good thing: Churches sing songs as a way of expressing their love for God. No one else is looking at you. Just join in if you want to.
5. You don’t have to Pay: You are not expected to give any money—it’s just something that people committed to the church may choose to do.
6. You will listen to a sermon: It’s not as bad as it sounds. You get to learn about who Jesus is, what the Bible says and why we celebrate Christmas, Easter and other events.
7. You will be rewarded: Church usually finishes with tea/coffee and a biscuit.
8. Church is not a building: The building is where we meet, but a church is a community of people who want to support each other.
9. It’s not about rules: Christianity is not about following rules, but about a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ who guides us through life.
10. It’s all about Easter: Easter is the foundation of the Christian Faith. Jesus is God, who came as a human and took our burdens by dying on the Cross. Then he rose again to life, showing us through God we can conquer everything that defeats us and have new life with Jesus Christ
The Salvation Army has been in Ashburton since 1884 and we exist to bring people into a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ and to serve our local community.
