As a recent visitor from the US, I found the Akoranga station and bus system around Auckland to be excellent and I want to congratulate and thank the citizens New Zealand for this amazing experience. Having done my research before traveling, I knew I should purchase the AT HOP card at the airport. I rode the bus every day, to and from Takapuna, Waiake, the Harbour Viaduct, SkyCity, Auckland Domain, and AKL airport. It saved me a lot of money, and since I was more interested in seeing as much of the local scenery as possible, I rather preferred this mode of transportation.nnI particularly liked using Akoranga bus station, it was a lovely 17-min walk from Takapuna Motor Lodge, where I stayed comfortably and affordably for 9 nights.nnThe public toilet was decent, the one time I needed to use it. The buses are clean and modern, with USB ports. Some of the buses are double-decker, that's fun! I was there between Christmas and New Year's Day and the buses were never crowded.nnI found the connections I needed were easy via Akoranga. The instructions in the AT HOP mobile app were very good. I was a little confused at the start, but soon got comfortable using it and understanding exactly which bus stop I needed. The live tracking is super!nnTips for foreigners: Don't forget to tag OFF! My first couple of rides cost me $6.00 instead of $4.01 because I did not know that tagging off was necessary - though the buses have plenty of signage all over the place! I guess I was just too preoccupied looking at the scenery and navigating, I did not notice the Tag-Off instruction until I checked the balance on my HOP card and it was less than I expected.nnVery easy to top up online and at machines! Fantastic public transportation system, and that is a great compliment coming from a Los Angeles County resident!
1. People cannot buy bus hop card here. They always use this as reason for free ride.n2. People keep asking where to get bus to the “North” or City. Need more BIG sign for it.
Akoranga is a station that does its job. It is nothing special, however provides connections to the North Shore and the city centre as well as Albany.
Bus station in Auckland is amazingly organized and easy to accessnUsing public transportation through the app - AT mobile make it easier
Nice and spacious. Has snack vending machines but you can't buy tickets
