Had heard a lot about this place and finally got to eat here. The food is really delicious, every dish was done perfectly and really mouth watering. Definitely would come back to have dinner for a birthday or celebration. The restaurant is very busy, so I suggest booking in advance.
We originally chose our time and the venue XO PP as it was convenient for a pre-meal lunch before seeing Yotam Ottolenghi at the ICC but they cancelled due to Covid, I hadn't seen my dear friend Tammi for nearly a year so we decided to still do lunch, we are very glad we did. ⁣ ⁣ Located on the Mezzanine level of The Darling Exchange, nicknamed by locals as the Bird’s Nest or the Steamer Basket, an architectural masterpiece designed by world-renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and surrounded by almost 20kms of timber slates that envelope the façade of the building.⁣ ⁣ Interiors are designed by Alex Wong of Paring Onions Design, and also behind the award-winning interiors of The Century at The Star. ⁣ XOPP offers a more modern and playful restaurant experience, a new reiteration of the Golden Century Group; coupled with familiarities and tributes to the original Golden Century which celebrates three decades of being part of the Sydney dining scene.⁣ ⁣ This was my first time at a Golden Century venue and I loved it - it was fairly quiet, like Sydney at the moment, but the food, the staffing and the venue were marvellous. My fave thing was the fluro orange chopsticks, seriously I even considered stealing them lol⁣ ⁣ :⁣ Steamed Fish, Prawn and Pork White Dumplings⁣ Steamed Lotus Leaf Wrapped Sticky Rice w/ Pork Mince⁣ Prawn Wontons in Spicy Chilli Sauce⁣ XOPP Prawn Mini Mantou, XO Mayonnaise & XO Sauce⁣ Salt and Pepper Squid⁣ Crispy Pork Rib, Red Bean-curd⁣ Chinese Broccoli w/ Oyster Sauce⁣ Liquid Lava Custard Buns⁣ ⁣ The food was all good, there was nothing we didn't like, sure it could be better but we had a great catch up and a great meal and I didn't drink anything but water!! ⁣
Excellent and authentic Chinese food! It was so good I went twice in the one week I was there! The house speciality was of course XOPP, Pipis fried in XO sauce with a crispy layer of rice vermicelli at the base. Another winner was the live abalone poached and served with lettuce and an super tasty broth. All other dishes were outstanding
Bit of a hit or miss, some dishes were quite ordinary like the squid and fried rice that were not golden at all and quite plain. However, would recommend the chicken liver spread and cauliflower as those were quite extraordinary. Lobster and crab were okay not amazing
Having frequented the OG Golden Century for many years, we decided to visit XOPP to taste the delicious XO Pipis again. must say we were really disappointed with our visit. For type of establishment and prices you pay, you're greeted with disposable plastic table clothes and random bits of cutlery on the table. Waitress not interested in their customers at all. Took 10mins to flag them down for water, and since we asked for tap water instead of sparkling/still, they just plonked the jug down and walk away. Pipis are no longer weighed and shown to you before cooking. We ordered 1kg and what came out looked tiny. We checked with the waiter if it's the right order and he said that's a 500g plate we were served. We told him we had ordered 1kg, but if it's 500g just change our order accordingly. He then pulls in other waiters to look at our food and check the system and after 5mins just came back and said it's actually 1kg. Since they don't weigh the pipis and show you anymore, you have no idea what you are being served. But it certainly was not 1kg. The quality of the pipis have also dropped, much smaller and the famous XO sauce is thick and gluggy. We ordered Peking duck as an entree and that came out after the mains were served. Not real Peking duck with nice slices of crispy duck skin. Looks like your regular chopped Chinese duck that has had the bones removed. Wagyu beef with garlic cream sauce was actually really tough and they forgot to serve one of their dishes until we chase them. When it did come out some of the veggies were over cooked and some were still raw. Overall a very disappointing visit, especially for the prices we paid. Will always miss the OG golden century.
Famous for their XO sauce pp! There's a robot tray which sends food from the kitchen to the dining area! Everything was alright, food was served pretty fast as well.
Had dinner here with group of 5 and got a few dishes and rice. Food was decent overall and the lobster was good but expensive. Fresh scallop and pork mince in clay pot was a bit bland coming at the end of the course, would have been better earlier. Salted egg potatoes are a let down as expected. The rest of the dishes we had were okay but nothing outstanding.
XOPP is where it’s at if you want XO Pipi! The wholesome traditional flavours will leave you wanting more. They do them in 500g/1kg/1.5kg/2kg! It’s based on market price but regardless you have to try them ! Add the pan fried vermecilli with it too and you’ll give your dish a some softness and crunch from the noodles. The pipi’s were so fresh and barely had any of the sandy taste on them ! We tried some of their modern twist dishes like the Short Ribs where the meat was so nice and soft with heaps of flavour followed by the m5 wgagyu beef. They were not only presented nicely but the flavours really complemented the meat! The only downfall about our experience is that as soon as we sat down we ordered the Peking duck. I assumed they had forgotten it because it came at the very end of the meal! The service was sub par but the food makes up for it. I loved how they had their businesses name on the tissue with the jade bowls, plates and orange chopsticks. I will go back for the food!
We really enjoyed the pipis with the super crispy vermicelli and the prawn mantaos are to die for. The ribs were overly salty to the point of inedible and the scallop and pork mince vermicelli was also on the salty side. Ironically the salted egg yolk wedges were not salty at all which while welcome to balance out our other dishes probably isn't as advertised haha. They also charged us the wrong dish an extra $54! Which they corrected promptly but also charged us $12 for "tea" when we only had hot water. Service overall was very attentive contrary to other reviews.
Hosted dinner for friends in Sydney. Ordered the snow crab steamed with egg white, lobster noodles, half roast goost, two pigeons. Very well prepared and the only quirky aspect is with regards to wine. There is no BYO, and there is a minimum spend per pax after which there is no corkage.
