My mother spent nearly 4 weeks in Wantirna Palliative Care.nMy family and I are very thankful for the care and support my mother received while she was at end of life stage.nThey managed her pain and discomfort, showed empathy and care, and were very kind to family members and the huge number of visitors we had.nA huge thank you to all the nurses especially Pushpinder, Ash and Lauren. Also a special mention to Katerina who was a ray of sunshine and positivity every day while doing her cleaning rounds.nDr. Brian was sweet, comforting and a caring person.
My mother has been attending the memory clinic for the last few years seeing Enye Ong. I cannot speak highly enough of his care and support. The rapport he has built and developed is so comforting. I feel blessed he is part of mums treating team. Going forward I know she is in great hands and this so appreciated for me but also more importantly mum.
Our family member was admitted here after hearing they would be at end of life after first being admitted to Emergency at Angliss Hospital. It’s a totally different experience to the hospital, they do not provide active treatment no checking of vitals, no monitoring blood pressure etc - meaning they don’t try and prolong life or cure disease but rather let nature take its course and instead focus only on managing pain and comfort. They won’t provide medication except to relive pain or increase comfort. We were told this before coming but it definitely is sobering to come to realize there’s nothing more that they will do from a treatment standpoint.nnIn case this is helpful for others, the pall care unit is definitely much more quiet than a hospital so much more peaceful for carers and the patient. Almost all the patients are in the same condition so it’s much more accommodating and compassionate to people dying. We had lots of visitors come through and they were completely fine with that, whereas the Emergency room in the hospital only allowed 2 at a time. There are many private rooms for patients near end of life and it’s very large/spacious with private toilet. Almost like a 3 star hotel.nnNurses Therese and Sarah were the best, we’re thankful for all the care they provided, from administering pain meds to changing diapers, to feeding, helping change bed pans, urinary bottles, etc. It’s incredible how much they do to care for the patient with patience and professionalism.nnAlso suggest it’s best to have at least a family member there 24-7 and overnight if possible as the nurses generally only check up on the patient once an hour or so so if the patient needs anything in between and they can’t press the call button because they’re immobile, too weak, or not alert it’s up to you to call the nurse for help. They did give us a sofa bed in the room as well.nnOverall I’m glad we came here instead of staying in the Emergency Room at the hospital as they are much better suited and compassionate to people dying. However it’s important to realize that the doctors wont prescribe medication to prolong life, even providing something as simple as giving glucose to increase blood sugar - all they will do is focus on pain and patient comfort. So make sure that’s a decision you’ve accepted before you come.nnAlso parking is only free for 30 mins and basically no free street parking within a 10 min walk. Unless you have disabled parking, there are some free disabled bays near the entrance. After that it’s $5 for first hour, $15 for the day, need to pay every time you re-enter & exit. However it’s $5 for the day if you have a concession card but you must get a voucher from the front desk reception in advance and they are only there during business hours ~8-4? M-F so you’re out of luck if you forget to get the voucher or show up after hours. So recommend getting one as soon as you see them open, the voucher is valid for 24 hours anyway.nnThanks again to all the staff at Wantirna Pall Care, it can’t be easy caring for patients that you know will pass in the next few days. Our last moments were made much more peaceful with your care, so thank you.
My family member was happy to be transferred here after a nightmare experience at Box Hill Hospital. She was here for many weeks and everytime I visited was happy and smiley.Enjoying the food and especially the warmth and care showed by staff.Pain management very good which is extremely important , especially towards the end .Thankyou
I had my Mum here for 6 days until her passing in August 2023. I had read the online reviews & was fearful for her end of life care. A palliative nurse at The Angliss Hospital assured me Mum would be in the best of hands & care - he was right. My Mum experienced delirium & was often rude, angry & aggressive to the staff. The staff took it in their stride & were exceptionally caring, respectful & attentive. The nursing staff & Doctors managed Mum’s pain & situation without fault. My sister slept in Mum’s room for 5 nights & this was never a burden for the staff. Our sincere thanks to all who cared for Mum.
