Rustic Mountain Food
First came the pub, then the bakery. That was the way it went back when Blackheath was founded in the late 19th century. This building has been home to the town bakery, a world famous restaurant and now Vesta. The current incarnation - embodies all the magic of the past // inspiration - baked bread // vulcans checkerboard ice cream // sourcing local ingredientsThe original bakery, was built by Mr Alf Field and featured a Scotch oven at its heart. The bread sold was a wholesome white sourdough and delivered door to door by a horse and cart. Every Sunday, after church, Mr Field would fire the scotch oven to the delight of the Blackheath community, who would come to roast their meats and vegetables. In 1993 new Blackheath resident Barry Ross discovered the Scotch oven hidden behind a false wall. He and partner Phillip Searle immediately made an offer on the premises with the intention of restoring the rare Scotch oven and opening a restaurant. Vulcans was born. For almost 20 years Phillip and Barry enchanted guests with unique, slow cooked food from the Scotch oven. Vulcans became an icon of the Australian dining landscape. Here at Vesta, our intention was to solidify the mountain feel with a philosophy which isreturning us to the days from when the oven we inherited was born. We buy ingredients from the plentiful surrounds and create many components of the menu in house, such as butter, sour cream, labne, ricotta, sourdough bread, cured meats & ice cream. We invite you to experience Blackheath and its region with all your senses.feel the 220 degree celsius oven, smell the slow cooked lamb, taste the delights of the wine list and hear the enjoyment that our customers have .
