Was lovely to sit down and watch the world go by, people watching, happy chappies laughing, smiling and chattering away, truly the vibe and atmosphere today was amazing and infectious! We had the Italian Meatballs and the Calamari Fritti to start with and then the Seafood Marinara and the Scallopini Milanese A simply lovely home style Italian meal enjoyed will soaking up Melbourne on a glorious spring day !
Pretty special little Italian bistro Interesting carbonara with a few extra ingredients added than are traditionally used. Decent soft calamari, perfect wines by the glass and a Moreton bay bug spaghetti which was great. Homemade pasta here too.
As a humble Italian institution in Thornbury, Umberto has an extensive food and drinks menu to suit any preference. Whether you want a simple panini or authentic carbonara, there’s something for everyone. Between 3 adults we ordered 2 pastas spaghetti all’s marinara and penne con funghi, 1 serving of meatballs 3 balls, and zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta. Definitely enough food for a lunch sitting. Everything was really good–spaghetti marinara and the pork and veal meatballs were my favourite dishes of the day. Chilli oil wasn’t that hot though, you can’t reach the chilli in the bottle it’s served in either. I found it just made the pasta oily without adding additional flavours. Would go back, particularly to suss out Gigi Rooftop!
Absolutely stunning food and amazing staff, well priced as well. Will be coming back.Food: 5/5
We had a work function upstairs and the menu was set. The food was amazing! Antipasto was great, calamari was really tender and well cooked and both pasta dishes were to die for, as were all of the other dishes we had. The bar staff were friendly and quick to serve. Great place for a meal or function.
I love everything about this cafe. The vibe is classic and comfortable environment. Food is authentic! I ordered their pasta and it blew my mind. Staffs are friendly and attentive. Definitely coming back.
Good food & service. Friendly staff - observant. Limited drinks menu minimalist spirits/liqueurs . Much of the menu is in Italian so a little disconcerting. Very noisy. Had trouble hearing our conversation and waiting staff often had to repeat themselves. Very ordinary aesthetically. Small narrow seating area where we lunched. Overall, it was an OK experience but was good at what matters - the food.
Excellent food tastes like good Italy does not tourist Italy. Small menu, less horsing around and all the better..service is good too as is the Italian-esque feel inside. One of the best esp for price in Melbourne
Such a great place for authentic Italian food. The veal ragu and Caprese salad are my favourite. And the negroni's won't disappoint
Visited Umberto Espresso Bar last weekend after returning from our honeymoon in Italy, as you can tell we we're trying to escape back. We tried the bruschetta Trio, Ragu & Carbonara. We really enjoyed it. The ragu was definitely our stand out! Thank you for a wonderful display of Italy.
