Rented e-bikes and rode the twin cycle trail from Kaikohe to Opua in December. WOW what an amazing experience!nnE-bikes were top quality and battery lasted the whole ride even with high support on the whole day. The team at Top Trail were wonderful, giving us plenty of instructions at the beginning of the day. We booked everything online including the train. These e-bikes were probably some of the best bikes we ever rented, we opted for larger comfy seat package which was a very good call.nnIt was definitely a challenging ride from a distance perspective. The trail is mostly gravel, so very different from city e-biking we are used to. There is one section for about 200-400M you need to ride the highway, only took a few minutes and the road was empty. It’s also so quiet that you can hear if a car is coming from so far away. At times the signage is not the best, but we were aware of such and looked out for the signs. Throughout the day you cross the highway a number of times. We were able to stay on route throughout the whole day. We only had one group pass us in the morning and then we did not see any other bikers on the trail until the train. Taking the bike on a train was such a cool experience, the vintage railway was unique and the conductor let us climb the engine. The train ride is short. The section after the train/tunnel station and Opua has a pretty steep section, we found that portion had the least amount of signage.nnWe met with the shuttle in Opua.nnWe started around 9:30am-9:45am. I would not start any later, we ended up having enough time and stopped for lunch at Kawakawa for about an hour.nnWe heard that the section the other direction is better, we really enjoyed our portion of the trail. Hope we can return one day and complete the other portion of the trail.nnRecommendation for Top Trail: advertise on Instagram/Tik Tok to attract a younger generation. This is such a beautiful area and a unique experience.

Highly recommend for cruise passengers! My partner and I had a wonderful time. The team at Top Trails were super accommodating for our cruise ship's arrival and departure timing. Massive thanks to Rob and Keith for organising us for a wonderful ride through the countryside. Don't bother booking through the cruise company, these guys deserve all the credit!

A great way to take in some of New Zealand’s clean fresh air and see some beautiful countryside.  Service from the team was spot on and a lovely pie, cake and tea from Lee at the cafe at mission house.  Very enjoyable couple of days

The two-day cycle trail was really enjoyable especially on the electric bikes.  It was our first time using electric bikes and they were easy to operate and comfortable with the gel seats.  The bikes were in great mechanical condition and fitted out well for our personal needs.  We experienced areas of Kaikohe, Okaihau, Moerewa and Kawakawa from a different perspective not the road with lovely native groves along the way.nnIt was great to be able to board the train for the short trip before continuing on to Opua.nnThe staff at Top Trails were amazing to deal with from the time of booking the tour, arriving at the depot to find our bikes already set up, having any questions answered, the shuttle service from Horeke and Opua, and our final return to the depot saying farewell to what felt like family.nnThe accommodation that was set up for us was amazing and the service by the staff there was more than friendly and helpful.

We are 2 couples who enjoy ebiking. We were staying in Paihia and we interested in completing the Twin Coasts New Zealand Great Ride. A friend recommended we contact Top Trail Cycle Hire and Tours, which we did. We are in our early 70's and have our own ebikes. Top Trail personnel were extremely helpful, suggesting we complete the Trail over 2 days, starting in Kaikohe and cycling East to Opua on the first day and from Kaikohe cycling West to Horeke on the second day. This proved to be a great decision as the cycling was mainly downhill in both directions. Top Trails provided shuttle transport for us and our bikes from the end point of each day's ride back to Kaikohe. The briefing for each days ride and the advice about where we could use toilets, fill drink bottles and buy coffee and food was excellent. Top Trails were professional, friendly and helpful - in particular the booking agent  Mel and Shuttle Driver, Rob. We highly recommend the company.
