Straight up - the original Toowoomba airport aka Toowoomba City Aerodrome - now caters for the flying enthusiast and small commercial aircraft. The grounds are clean and tidy and they have a seating area near the club lounge area for having a picnic or just to view the planes as they arrive and depart.nnOnce a year the airport is host to the David Hack classic memorial fly in and car show - it is a great morning out for the whole family with various planes and helicopters on display and many and various cars from the local car club.nnIf you would like to learn to fly or just take part in a flight - see the DDAC - Darling Downs Aero Club.nnAcross the road from the airport entrance is the Qld Transport Department display - both locations are well worth a visit.
The airport in itself is quite clean and nothing to complain about, the only thing is that the whole experience is quite weird. I do think that I have done my fair share of traveling, and Toowoomba's airport was the quietest simply all what I had to do was enjoy myself with a cup of tea and wait for my flight. I did come up to the airport early at 3-4 am when my flight was at 7-8pm, it was closed I almost laughed. Never been into an airport which was closed at such a time.nnRegardless a friendly staff member hurried to open the doors and I was in. On my ranking of airports it safely lands at number 10, highly recommended.
G'day, This afternoon I tried to contact the Twmba Airport to report several objects flying high approx several hundred metersand heading east above my property at Gowrie junction. The objects that I observed were cardboard and one piece that landed on my neighbours property and was approx one meter square and 2-3 mm thick, many others were gaining height into the air traffic apace.nI tried to contact the Toowoomba airport only to talk to the Toowoomba council general enquiries counter and put on hold for several minutes before I gave up.nI then contacted Wellcamp airport and relayed the situation.nWellcamp, the number is listed.nnIf this had been a real emergency I would still be trying to find a airport contact phone number or still on hold for the Toowoomba council.nnGil Bailey
An airport in this location was fine when it opened 89 years ago, but now it is surrounded by residential homes. With the second larger, modern airport opened a short drive away it is time to close this relic.
Very noisy daily flying across wilsonton heights especially the old planes. Can't they change flight plans occassionally.
