The University of Notre Dame

Story

The University of Notre Dame Australia is an Australian private Catholic university established in 1989. Its main campus is in Fremantle, Western Australia, with satellite campuses in Broome, Western Australia, and Sydney, New South Wales.HistoryThe university was founded in 1989 by president and vice-chancellor, the Reverend David T. Link, who continued serving as dean of the university's law school during the two years it took to establish Notre Dame Australia. Peter Tannock succeeded Link and served as vice-chancellor, expanding the university's operations to Sydney and northwest Western Australia, and broadening the university's schools. Celia Hammond, a lawyer, was appointed as the university's third vice-chancellor in 2008. Hammond was previously the head of the university's law school in Fremantle and stated in her inauguration speech that knowledge and learning must be within a framework of humanity in order to ensure that students have love and respect for the world, not just wisdom. She also said:At Notre Dame we are not simply transmitters of information, creators of knowledge. Our mission will always be to teach and to educate in an environment that encourages people to seek understanding, to seek wisdom, to seek to serve, to seek to live in a way that fulfils everyone's higher purpose.CampusesThe university has campuses in Fremantle and Broome in Western Australia and two locations in Sydney, New South Wales.Organisation and administrationGovernanceThe governance structure of Notre Dame is determined largely by its enabling act of parliament and its statutes. These specify the source, role and functions of its trustees, board of directors and board of governors and the principal officers and academic leaders of the university.

I visited the website of the university and impressed. The University of Notre Dame Australia stands as a beacon of academic excellence, fostering intellectual curiosity, ethical leadership, and a deep commitment to holistic education. Renowned for its student-centered approach, it blends rigorous academics with a supportive learning environment, ensuring students not only excel professionally but also grow as compassionate, well-rounded individuals. With its strong emphasis on research, community engagement, and values-driven education, Notre Dame University continues to shape future leaders who make meaningful contributions to society. Its campuses, rich in heritage and innovation, offer a dynamic space where tradition meets modernity, making it one of Australia's most esteemed institutions.
The University of Notre Dame Australia advertises itself as a “student-centred” educational institution, but in reality provides absolutely no support for students and has little to no regard for their well-being.nnI am in my fourth year of study and have consistently had problems from administration. The university offers no flexibility with their classes, typically only offering one mandatory class a week with one time slot and no online options. The result is many students having timetables that require them to be on campus multiple days a week for just one class, thus significantly impacting their ability to work. Both myself and many of my peers have raised this issue with admin, and have been told to completely drop the course and take it at another time which often extends our degrees by at least one semester. One of my peers was told by a staff member that she should not be working at all while at university. This attitude during a cost-of-living crisis is extremely insulting and indicative of Notre Dame’s total disregard for their students’ welfare and ability to support themselves, not to mention completely dismissive of mature age students who often need to work to pay their bills and support their families.nnI have found that a majority of staff members exclusively read off of the lecture slides that are available to students on Blackboard, and very rarely offer extra insights or teach beyond what is already on the slides. This approach to “teaching” is lazy and ineffective, and does not necessitate mandatory attendance.nnThe administration have consistently demonstrated abysmal communication skills by leaving emails unanswered for weeks at a time and not picking up the phone. On the rare occasion you are able to reach them, they are extremely uninformed about Notre Dame’s policies and processes and often pass you off to another person, who also takes weeks to respond to you and cannot offer any answers or solutions.nnHonourable mentions go to the University’s awful Wi-Fi, lack of student parking or a discount price, last minute timetable changes often 1-2 weeks before semester starts that are poorly communicated, and a “preferential” class selection system that does not guarantee you a spot in the classes that work best for your timetable. Students are often left with 5-6 hour gaps in their timetables because of this and the limited classes available.nnI would not recommend studying here to anyone who values a balanced life or needs to work, as you will not receive any support from the University or a high-quality education to make up for it.
I have studied here since 2019.nRecently I needed to obtain one of my official academic transcripts as I was applying to a different university. I have been trying to obtain this for close to a month. After calling and literally begging them to please help me as not having this proof of study would affect my chances of being accepted into another course, I was told by one of their admin staff “we can’t do anything, the university has sent a letter out regarding the cyber attack” I said the university I’m applying to doesn’t care about a letter, they need proof of my study in order to accept process my application, she said that’s not Notre dames problem and it’s upto the university I’m applying to, to decide whether the letter they had provided would be sufficient and that other universities have been accepting of a letter. When I told the university I’m applying to about what was said to me, they said that it was appalling behaviour from ND. There is no compassion, no empathy or kindness from Notre dame.nAlmost a month of trying to obtain this and still there is no access to the student portal or anything else. I cannot even get into my university email account. The deadline to submit my supporting documents ends this Sunday and I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen for me.nHow can a university not even provide an update in over 3 weeks to the students that chose to come to this university. Where is the respect?nHowever, once again, excuse after excuse.nRecently read an article written on the cyber attack that shows they are trying to save face but even their own staff members have admitted to lack of transparency, disruptions in their pay, unpaid overtime, being unable to teach efficiently ect during this time. For a university that boasts about stutdent satisfaction, there seems to be little care about the students that go here.nnThis is a reoccurring issue, poor communication, they seem to care more about their image being tarnished than real transparency. This university has proven time and time again how poorly they are able to adapt to changes and it always has a large impact on the students.
I agree with a lot of reviews stating the disorganized aspect of this uni. I was initially excited to enroll into Notre dame as I preferred a smaller class size. However, not long after enrolling I realized how disorganized this uni is. I understand many organizations faces IT disruptions, however most organizations would immediately try to get their system back up and running immediately. However, ND had let the IT disruption go on for more than a month. Students were left with no fixed time table and no access to student emails. Very disappointing experience.
An unorganised university with no customer service, systematic policies and infrastructure is at least 10 years behind the competition. I have been here for over 3 years and had nothing but problems, from teachers shouting at me the university deeming this behaviour satisfactory for students measuring student satisfaction by ONLY completion of the course I do not want to spend another $2k on re completing this course out of principle to students unable to graduate because the university cannot provide students with the correct information when they do it takes 3/4 of a semester to get an email response. While smaller classes may be beneficial, it is clear that Notre Dame has lost its edge and only listens to a small selection of students who pay over 2k per course per semester feedback.
