The Mexican Cafe
"Maíz is the word for corn in Spanish which is the backbone of the Mexican food scene. Maíz Mexican Street Food is a food and beverage concept that celebrates and integrates a wide range of corn preparations that most Mexican restaurants aren’t offering at the moment. Our menu draws on the bold and fresh flavours of Mexico’s street food culture, catered to the Australian palette and market."

We have been to Mexico and I can guarantee this food is absolutely amazing. We had 2 starters, 2 mains and a dessert to share and we couldn't pick a favourite. Everything was 100%. Staff very nice and the courtyard area is a beautiful little space to enjoy it. Retractable roof on the courtyard so don't worry about being exposed to the elements. We will be back again.
Super nice food in a nice environment. Plenty of vegan options although the set menu was a bit confusing and sometimes I wasn’t sure what was vegetarian and what was vegan. I do think they make an effort to cater for everyone though as we had a group of 7-8 people including a vegetarian, a vegan and a GF and they did their best to accommodate us all. Just keep in mind that the patio area is still quite exposed to the elements despite being covered so, if you go in winter, take a coat!
Great experience overall. Though the tostadas were a bit tricky to eat, the food tasted great! Decent portion of the guacamole and chips which was nice. Service was slightly lacking.
Amazing food and drinks! I find that I always need to manage my expectations when having Mexican food in Australia because I was spoiled with options growing up in California. However, MAIZ Mexican Street food does not disappoint! Every dish I tried was delicious, the staff can pronounce the items on the menu, give great advice and offer wonderful service. I'll definitely be back to try the rest of the menu!! Make sure to try their Tostada Tuesdays! Vegetarian options: Great vegan and vegetarian options
Delicious and affordable food - got the esquites and half way through it decided to order another one. The cactus ceviche was also delicious. The interior is gorgeous and we loved our upstairs seating in the alcove.
Authentic refined Mexican food in Newtown. Mexican owners who started out selling sopes at local markets. Their restaurant began as a breakfast Cafe then evolved to serving dinners. Lively and relaxed dining. I had their sopes with hibiscus and pineapple chilli jam, their delicious and beautiful swordfish aguachile and finally their tostadas with octopus and oaxacan cheese. Refined plating, beautiful flavours and very friendly staff. So impressed. Highly highly recommended
Great food, with authentic Mexican ingredients-check out their chili selection- and drinks. The Michelada spices, lime and salt mixed in a lager was on point and the food was what you expect from a "real" not tex-mex Mexican restaurant. Staff was attentive and knowledgeable. Venue looks like a little hacienda in the heart of Newtown. We'll be back!
I would give 6 stars if Google allows. In general, I think the flavour profile of their dishes is very broad. I’m also very intrigued with the homie decoration of this place. Feels like dinning in someone’s front yard. Tamales has nice soft texture with creamy kale and sour pickled beetroot and a crispy layer of cheese. They seems to charred the tostadas as the corn base itself has that nice burnt coal aftertaste. I enjoyed the sour sweet pineapple with the charred octopus on tostadas. Cilantro dip is a bonus. The grilled potato and the 10 chilli sauce mixed well, rich but not too heavy. And the sour cactus and the avocado mix is refreshing. Highly recommended the corn sponge cake dessert as there’s pickle salted strawberries which balance up the sweet. The cream is so light and fluffy.
In a quirky indoor–outdoor courtyard with a retractable roof, Maiz Mexican Street Food delivers Mexican dishes that stretch beyond tacos and burritos all the way into brunch. Breaking your fast might see you tuck into sopes thick corn tortillas topped with black beans, braised cactus, amaranth, and goats cheese crème acida $19 with some sliced avocado $4 if you like. Cocktails are an all-day thing with a gentler morning list offering up hibiscus tea-flavoured Jamaica Mezcalitas $19/each with orange and chilli salt rims at the serious drinker end, and the same Nuestra Soledad mezcal lengthened with blood orange soda in Gaviláns $16/each at the lighter end. I preferred the evening list where poblano margaritas $22/each and spicy Tommy’s reposados $23/each with muddled jalapeños vied for attention. Best thing I put in my mouth was a colourful aguachile Rojo de Pez espada $24 where Ulladulla swordfish tangoed with raspberry and hibiscus leche de tigre and ancho chilli. If things get too hot, reach for the pulque $16 either on ice or in cocktail form as el ombligo de la luna $17. The fermented agave drink is soothing in the same way Korean makgeolli is. Small dishes—like enamel cups of esquites $5/each and green chorizo molotes $7/each filled with free-range pork and served with 7-chilli mayo. and pink picked onions for relief—out-perform mains. Confit duck as enmolada de pato $27 in a pressed tortilla with a macadamia-spiked mole read well but was a bit one-note. I preferred Fremantle octopus in adobo on tostadas $38 with caramelised charred pineapple salsa and Oaxaca cheese. Helados Mexicanos $6/each of the day was a mango pulp ice block with a candied chilli ancho surprise, sprinkled with morita chilli. Salt-fermented strawberries and a foamy vanilla chantilly impressed against sweet corn sponge cake $14 which also makes a dressed down brunch menu appearance with mascarpone and honey with seasonal poached fruit $12. Dessert in a glass, in the form of Nixta corn liqueur $12 with pepita oil and cinnamon or a cafe de olla clay pot coffee based Dios Mio! Carajillo $20 wrap up a meal here nicely: one that included plenty of cocktails without an extortionate bill.
We sat in the courtyard and really enjoyed our meal. We had the corn and guacamole for starters then beef and fish for mains. Great high ceiling, quality service and very chilled atmosphere. It’s one of those places you know is a safe option and consistently good.
