Lovely museum, quite eclectic starting from a tribute to The Jam and the Mods'fashion, some amazing, unusual furniture including some quirky chairs that you love to own but wouldn't know where to put them in your home! There is also a couple of galleries dedicated to painters, and may more displays that should keep you occupied for a while. The staff is pleasant, polite and helpful and the boutique... well, everything was too tempting, and rather dear, but it's art, that I ended up with another dust catching fridge magnet! I wouldnt bring too young kids, nor daft teenagers, that would spoilt your enjoyment.
I visited this museum for the first time. It seems it may have recently re opened. Your ticket is good all year. You have to pay a small entrance fee if you are a non resident. Small but very varied and interesting collections.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Awesome collection! It's definitely a broad range. Also, basically the ticket you purchase for the day is good for re-entry the whole year. Obviously as long as you bring your ticket. It's worth the small fee!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
We loved it. We thought the Jam exhibition is done, surprised it wasn't. A lot to see there and you can go again when ever you want with the main ticket. Valid for one year
Amazing collection of pieces from wide variety of different time periods. Very cheap for the quality of the displays and buying a ticket allows you access for the year. Great way to spend an afternoon would highly recommend.
I got free entry here by using Art Fund membership. This museum has a very eclectic collection of items and galleries, including a new gallery on archiligy that had artefacts from some very very early Brighton residents.
We visited on a rainy afternoon in October and were very pleased to be able to experience the historic interior of this unique building without bumping into too many other visitors. The rooms are laid out in a way that helps you understand how the building was originally used. The quality of the internal decorations is very high, with some rooms having been recently restored to reflect the original designs. There is a room upstairs that shows how one of the most extravagant rooms was restored, including an intricately designed carpet. There is a lot of history told in the panels in the rooms upstairs about the various uses of the building. There is also a very interesting video on the history of the building and stories of some of its hidden treasures.
Great museum to visit when you're in the city; good variety across most of the exhibits - especially loved the Bowie exhibit, told a great story and featured a lot of photos I hadn't seen before. Interesting exhibit on Brighton's LGBTQ history too!
The architecture is really cool and the museum's collection is quite wide ranging, if not random. I gave it 3 stars just because I found the curation to be in need of improvement. For example, some of the paintings have detailed descriptions while others, namely the ones with Black subjects, have little detail and don't offer proper contextualization. Another thing I noticed is that for the portraits with Black subjects, the name on the description has been changed to remove derogatory racial names, but the plaque on the frame itself still contains the original name. Since there is no accompanying text to further describe this choice, it does little to correct past racism. Another example that comes to mind is the way the texts highlight the various Asian and African inspirations behind some of the works by Western artists, but still frames these techniques as Western innovation instead of centering the non-Western influences as the originators of the designs and techniques. I enjoyed the chair collection and loved learning about Brighton's LGBTQ history!
A beautiful art gallery and museum. The display of silverware and furniture was beautiful, and the architecture of the museum itself was gorgeous too. The Queer the Pier exhibition was an eye-opener, and a timely reminder of how far we have come in the last few decades. I highly recommend a visit , worth the admission price.Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
