A very interesting pub, catering to the political folk that work around it and those that just want to pop in for a drink and a bite to eat. There is a history and take a walk around seeing the caricatures on display will definitely put a smile on your face. The citizens will understand. Well worth it.
A cool spot to explore and have a cuppa in the capital especially if you are around the beehive, just walk cross the street. Fun to look at the puppets representing the Government figures updated from time to time. The food is generous portion.
A group of us went there before Ed Sheeran concert. We decided to order platters to save time. The platters arrived on time and the portions were very generous. Staff were nice. Definitely will go back again.Food: 5/5
Arrived 6.05pm ordered drink and directed to table. Drink service excellent. Restaurant staff walking all around . At no time approached with menu. After 20 mins i approached the bar asked for menu and how to order. Disappointing start. Meal arrived promptly and was of a good standard. Restaurant staff need to lift their game.
@thebackbenchergastropub has a long history of political connection behind its contemporary satirical puppets. It started life as The Wellington Hotel in 1869 & its close proximity to Parliament made for a popular parliamentarian watering hole - earning it the nickname 'The Unofficial Bellamy's'. In 1991 the pub was revamped & renamed 'The Backbencher', decorated with cartoons from two of our most famous political satarists, Tom Scott & Trace Hodgson. In 2008 it became home to 'Back Benches', a political interview show. But perhaps most infamously of all, over the years its walls have been adorned with irreverent, satirical political & sporting puppets - from 'Joan of Arc' Helen Clark, to 'Batman & Robin' John Key & Bill English - each drawn by Murray Webb & formed by the very talented Bryce Curtis of WETA Workshop. Nothing particularly special to be found in the food or brews, but come for the puppets or pre-stadium event.
Calamari was a generous helping, well cooked, sorry no photos.Food: 4/5
Nice place, friendly staff, we had the journos platter and was enough to eat for the three of us and all nice and tasty. My 3 stars represents that I’d never return, the lack of a premium draft lager meant there was no draft for me to drink and I don’t like hoppy beers and macs gold and Steinlager are not my cup of tea.
Amazing fun decor.Beautiful well cooked food and well priced.I had the pork belly which had a particularly good rhubarb relish. The steak was generously sized and came with heaps of veges. The chocolate dessert balanced with vanilla gelato and tangy berries was the perfect finish.I am absolutely going back when next in Wellington.
above average food quality & service. that's why we have been there twice in last 3 - 4 months. also the Parliament is just cross road. it is very nice to have an relax walk after meal when weather is OK.
We had a great time here, went on a Sunday night so it was relatively quite. Service was good and we weren't waiting long to receive our meals. We could barely finish the desert as we were so full. My only complaint is we had trouble contacting them over the phone and had to book online. Not a big deal in the end...
