That Greek Tavern has opened in Glen Iris, bringing to Malvern Road the hearty flavours of the mountainous north, as well as all the style, atmosphere, sense of occasion you’d expect from a great tavern. The realisation of a long-time dream for the Constantinou family, originally from Kastoria in northern Greece, That Greek Tavern exudes warmth and welcome. Family photos adorn the walls of a space designed to meld modern and traditional and to help inspire a sense of fun and culinary adventure. Even its title is a cheeky take on the popular trend of giving Greek restaurants a man’s name.

The Constantinou family cut its teeth on a particularly competitive strip for dining. For over 22 years, its Lamb On Chapel restaurant has been a favourite of late-night clubbers, celebrities and those who love the gyros succulent, the salad fresh and the atmosphere lively.

At That Greek Tavern, manager/chef Jim Constantinou is carrying on a tradition passed down from his food-loving father, a long-time cook with a passion for fresh produce and a gift for gyros and the grill. Sharing and celebration are essential ingredients; the menu features mezzes (small plates) and dips, as well as generous meat and seafood platters ideal for a party table.

The menu also features such regional specialities as a tangy, spicy feta dip and, of course, the warming dishes associated with the mountains – pastitsio, mousaka, stuffed capsicum and rabbit stew. But the favourites are here, too, with choice seafood, gyros, char-grilled lamb cutlets and fresh salads all popular options. There’s a well-considered list of wines, beers and spirits, with particular attention, of course, to Greek wines.

Upstairs, the Constantinous have created a stylish, intimate entertaining space cum bar, perfect for a pre-dinner drink or for lingering after dessert and coffee. It’s also proving to be a favourite for parties and family gatherings – imagine your group of up to 40 family and friends enjoying music, and friendly, attentive service while delicious mezzes and sizzling platters of meat and seafood make their way up to your party.
