Born in Cambodia, Chef Ken first arrived in Australia as a Refugee in 1982. By the time he got to Australia Ken had already become crippled by polio in his right leg, leaving him with a permanent disability. School was a struggle because of the language barrier, and after two years he dropped out. After several operations on his leg Ken was able to walk again and soon took up a cooking traineeship in Sydney. Here he learned western cookery during the day and of an evening worked in a Chinese restaurant washing dishes.
Ken travelled to Thailand to rescue his father and it was there that he discovered his passion for Thai and Cambodian food. When returning to Australia he applied for many jobs but found that due to his disability no one wanted to employ him. This is how he came to be a Proprietor chef as he knew he had to create his own employment.
After many years of cooking around Australia, in 2002 Ken opened a restaurant in Gatton where he established a huge clientele and gained a positive reputation. In 2005 he moved his restaurant to Toowoomba but found himself back in Gatton by 2009 opening Thai and More Cuisine at the Gatton Bowls Club. As the restaurant in Gatton excelled Ken decided to open Thai Khmer Cuisine, in Ipswich in September 2013. Due to great difficulty of maintain the two restaurants Ken made an enormous decision to close Thai Khmer Cuisine so he could focus and be back in his home restaurant in Gatton where his family and friends are situated. In 2016 Ken made a grave decision to again change venue to the Gatton Jubilee Golf Club. The business is doing extremely well as a reflection of the product and service given to his customers.
The products Ken uses are prepared fresh and each meal is individually cooked to ensure satisfaction. All of our menu items can be prepared specifically for vegetarians and 95% of our menu items are gluten free. Also, Ken is happy to cook any special requests providing he has at least two days’ notice, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
