Wonderful experience, fantastic exhibits and immaculate presentation. 3 and a half hours with a quick lunch in the Cafe was not long enough! The Traders and Whalers boat ride was also fascinating and informative.
Such an enjoyable museum. Keep your day open you going to need all the hours you can get for this experience. Great for young and old. Great coffee shop, dioramas are spectacular, all done by one artist. It's truly worth it.
We visited the museum on the recommendation from friends and were totally blown away. The attention to detail is mind blowing. We had the opportunity to meet with the master behind this magnificent creation and the museum collection, Nigel Ogle. And he has some interesting stories to tell and is only too keen to share how he created this spectacle.nWe would say the river ride is on par with what we've seen in the UK and Paris.nOur recommendation is that you get there as early as possible as the museum is massive and you can spend hours in there.
Well worth paying to visit this museum. I don't love museums as a rule but this one is well worth the time. Things to see inside and outside. Amazing models. A boat ride. Interesting history brought to life. This place is fun not stuffy. Thanks Mr Ogle
Fascinating place! So much interesting local history to learn and the dioramas are amazing. I particularly found the Maori wars, the Adventures of Kimble Bent, and the butcher shop a real eye opener as I’ve visited several museums during my visit around New Zealand and none were as visual and detailed as this or shared such perspectives. Can’t believe Tawhiti Museum was all Nigels creation and vision also with the help and support of the local towns people- we had a chance to meet him in the gift shop and had a nice chat about his displays. You will need a few hours of exploration here as it’s very educational for young and old! We didn’t have time to take the rides but if you can, consider atleast one ride during your visit. Also, Mr Badger’s Cafe is a nice spot to pop in and enjoy some homemade snacks, coffee and tea out in the garden : - the little Wind in the Willows dioramas are adorable!
