Highly recommended! Weekdays got no feesfor kids and arranged tours you might have to purchase tickets. Many sections to explore. Staff are friendly and helpful with heaps of knowledge. Gift shop got several lovely cards, books and small souvenirs. Overall a Hobart must visit.
The best place to go and spend time with a family during weekend and school holiday. A lot of things to see and indirectly learn from various art and historical works in this well maintained museum. Short walking distance from the Pier and downtown in Hobart. Definitely recommended!
So much bigger than I anticipated. My children spent time doing a hands on art project with an artist Takira and enjoyed themselves. It’s awesome to have an artist who is active, engaging, present, and also has work displayed at the same time. I particularly enjoyed the furniture and the natural history section. I could have spent much more time there! We parked in Dunn Parking area which is right next to the Museum.
It's actually a decent museum and there's a little gift shop at the entrance. They're displaying "The house of longing" by Gay Hawkes when I visited and the artwork is amazing.
Wonderful place to visit. Great art and a very informative detailing of Tasmania's history. There's also a cafe with good food and a great gift shopwe went twice.
TMAG never disappoints! However their children's section, Mapiya lumi is really something magical. Prebookings are essential, so you don't miss out. I found it a great way to finish our time at the museum. After restraint from the children, respecting the exhibits, this allowed them to really dive deeper and explore everything safely using all their sense excluding taste lol. Towards the end a dream time story is projected on the roof for all to enjoy. My little ones rested on the floor looking up and enjoyed it. The last session for the days runs longer, the other sessions are 45minutes. This time frame worked well for us.
Mix of history and art, also with money notes and Antarctic explorer info, spend about 1 hour ish. Some good activities for children but have to prebook.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
We've visited a number of museums and art galleries around the world and were really looking forward to our first visit here. Unfortunately we lasted barely half an hour before walking out. To begin with, we found the staff to be remarkably unfriendly and almost condescending in some instances. Many of the exhibits were closed and those that *were* open were haphazard and poorly documented. The photo attached to this review shows just how organised things are at this supposedly world-class attraction. The final straw, for me anyway, was in the coin and medal collection which, to the museum's credit, was actually worth spending some time in. Unfortunately the lighting in the room is so poor it was basically impossible to see any detail in the coins. When I used my phone with a dimmed torch for some additional light, I was swiftly reprimanded by a lurking staff member who informed me that I may "damage the coins with my light" and to "stop immediately". Seriously. After that interaction I had no reason to waste any more of my time at the museum and left very unimpressed. The only redeeming factor of the whole visit is that entry was free. If we *had* paid for entry I would have asked for a refund in a very dark room obviously, to avoid damaging the currency.
Must to see, The Sidney Nolan - Ned Kelly series travelling exhibition, simply amazing, this art gallery, museum, is up there with the best in the world. And of course, the wind from the Antarctic, when it meets Hobart Tasmania, will make you take a deep breath of wonderful art.
Beautiful museum rich with history. Plenty of diverse exhibits on display, from Aboriginal art, to wildlife and paintings.
