How we have managed to visit Hobart regularly for decades and not know about this incredible museum is beyond me! When in Hobart, do yourself a favour and visit this great place. I'm so glad we have finally found this museum. The Maritime Museum of Tasmania has been carefully thought out and the displays both upstairs and downstairs are nothing less than impressive. I think my favourite part of the museum was the Captain's quarter's in the corner upstairs - complete with vintage television and other furnishings and fittings of the era. The staff are particularly friendly and knowledgeable. They are more than happy to provide further information about the maritime history of Tasmania and beyond. Helping make sense and learning more about the Tasman Bridge disaster, for example, was just one of the ways they helped us navigate and fully appreciate this museum. You could easily spend half a day here. Don't miss the chance to visit when you are in Hobart. I also like the way in which you can be in the museum yet look out the window and see the world of modern maritime playing out in Constitution Dock. A very special place that should probably be visited and appreciated more than it currently is. Thanks so much for an exceptional and enjoyable visit!
Good to walk around a maritime history in Tasmania. Not free admission, but good to time spent with a family if you are interested in Tasmania history. Clean, tidy, and well organized. Recommended!
The Maritime Museum of Tasmania in Hobart is a lovely museum with lots of detailed and fascinating information about the seafaring history of Tasmania, piracy, whaling... the exhibited items are fascinating and the staff is very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my stay there very much.
for a small entry fee you will gain access to history of Tasmania and indeed Australia you may not be aware of or at least, not in as much depth as here. the staff are friendly and willing to assist you with understanding of the layout and artefacts on display! particularly enjoyed the respectful displays and sharing of indigenous Australian history which all of us can always learn more about might I add the occasional jokes and spottings of mini fig legos were also a bit of fun
This is a really worthwhile museum for sailors, yachties and landlubbers. Varied and fascinating displays, helpful volunteers and an escape to another world zthere is everything from a hunting whales video to Japanese submarine missions to survey Tasmania and attack shipping. Well worth the small entry fee of $12 for adults. There is a family rate I hear. We spent two immersive hours

Fitting tribute to Tasmania's rich nautical history. Beautiful Carnegie building near Hobart's main museum parking. 2 storeys but has a lift for easy accessibility. Wonderful volunteer staff who are eager to share their knowledge and love of Hobart history. It is a real pleasure to hear them talk with such enthusiasm. Great selection of old photographs and artefacts, intricate hand made ship models plus life size replicas of an Indigenous canoe and navy captain's cubby. Great fun to explore for young and old. Can walk across the road to eat waterfront fish and chips after your visit!
This is the last place we visited before leaving Hobart to go back home and I am glad we did. A fascinating history of ships are on display. Our favourite displays were the captain's cabin and the Antarctic research vessel area. The gentlemen helping at the museum are also very friendly and helpful.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I'm not overly interested in maritime history but it was such a lovingly curated space full of fascinating objects. The staff are so very friendly and informed and love to chat. Would I go back? Maybe not but I'll tell everyone else to go!
