I signed up to the ‘Absolute Beginners - How to Paint’ course with the expectation that the classes would be structured and guided. Unfortunately we were left to our own devices for much of the course and worked almost completely independently. The tutor failed to teach and deliver what is outlined online as the course structure and topics covered. Only when I would express some frustration with my work, would the tutor come around to assist, with some reluctance (unsure why). I contacted the school to provide feedback and to request either a refund or credit towards another course. In response, the school (Helen) was quick to defend the tutor stating that they are “one of our most popular and trusted teachers” and that their “classes consistently produce a high standard of artwork and student feedback has always been excellent.” The issues I raised in terms of the course structure and content delivered, were completely dismissed. Additionally I was advised that there are “no provisions for refunds as clearly stated on the website and at enrolment”, although their ‘Terms of Service’ online state that “requests for a refund under compassionate grounds should be made as soon as possible.” I was then offered a 50% discount for a future course on the proviso that I transfer to another class to complete my remaining 3 classes. I explained that due to my work commitments I would not be available to attend any other classes this Term, though would be happy to accept the discount offer for a future course. Two weeks later, I have yet to receive a response, despite following up with another email to confirm the offer. In fairness, I did acknowledge that the tutor is extremely talented and that my feedback was not targeted towards their artistic skills but more so to the structure of the course and content delivered i.e. topics/concepts/techniques. I have been left feeling disappointed with not only how my feedback was received, which is discouraging in itself for students to provide any honest feedback, but also with how the issues I raised and how I myself were dismissed. Given the cost of the course ($360) I cannot say that you get value for money, and I would argue that you’d learn a lot more watching YouTube videos for free! I would further argue, that the school is in breach of the Australian Consumer Law for failing to deliver a service as advertised. It is truly a shame that this has been my first experience with the school. On a side note, the Resource Kit of Acrylic paints "recommended for all beginners" ($90) was a poor choice, given as beginners we worked rather slow and the acrylics did not allow for good application and blending at our pace. Again, this feedback was dismissed and responded to with a suggestion to mix drying retarder with the paint.

I have attended the beginners and portrait class many times and it is a brilliant way to be introduced to art with a professional and master artist as a tutor(apple), with an unrivalled understanding of colours and technique. I have learnt so much and have gained unparreled experience in every lesson, with the environment being incredibly welcoming and exciting. The level of professionalism in the staff working for the school(Helen) is outstanding and are very willing to answer any questions you may have regarding the classes and any queries. My experience with this art school has enabled me to not only grow as a person, but to experience the wonders and relaxation that art has brought. I highly recommend this school for any that are interested in art.

Would recommend to anyone who is an absolute bigger or experienced artist - tutors cater for all levels of experience! Truly an incredible art school!

Very good instructors. The teachers are professionals. There is a lot of 1:1 time as the class sizes are small (8 people max). Classes usually run for 2 hrs. I took three classes and I would still be going if other commitments didn't get in the way. I highly recommend this place!
