St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne

About

St Paul's Cathedral is the home church for Anglicans in Victoria and the Seat of the Primate of Australia. It is a beautiful place of prayer and worship.

Story

St Paul’s Cathedral is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836.

Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul’s Parish Church.

Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral.

The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service.

The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne’s busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral a place at the heart of city life.

Very nice cathedral to visit. Incredible stained-glass windows. Don't forget to pay the fee of 5 AUD to be able to take pictures inside. They also have a little shop inside the cathedral with nice postcards, wooden toys (lovely Noah's ark), religious decoration items...

Due to its location in front of the Flinders St, it is undoubtedly the most eye catching building. Very beautiful outside. In the inside, it is a typical Anglican church with its beautiful and anglo saxon style decoration. The space for children playing inside the church is a bit too much. And sorry to say this, but they need to consider to rearrange their bell ringing. The ringing is so annoying and unharmonious. And i heard some people comment the same when i was waiting tram on the Flinders tram stop.

Beauriful Anglican cathedral in the heart of Melbourne CBD. Entrance is free, although signs say that a photo permit is $5. However, when we asked the gift store they said they were piloting getting rid of the permit and let us take pictures for free. Beautiful architecture and great acoustics for choirs or musicians. There was African music playing when we were there and it was lovely.
