It's very sad how Saint Francis Xavier church on Bank Street was allowed to demolished. It would have held so many special memories and milestones for many generations of families in the community over the years. Architecturally it was such an iconic building. It always made you feel like you were on hallowed ground. Many of us grew up knowing it represented us as Catholics. It was our rock and our foundation stone.nI was baptised a Catholic and had my first confirmation there. Mass was in Latin in those days and it sounded so beautiful almost like a chant. There was an organ upstairs and us school kids would sing in the choir and the acoustics and view looking down over the congregation was divine. The presbytery where the priests lived was next door. The sisters of Saint Joseph lived in the convent on Mansfield Terrace.nI went to Saint Joesph's Convent School which was behind the church. On Fridays we would always go to Mass in the morning and we would fast and not eat meat. The primary school classes started from Primer 1 and went up to Form 2.nUnfortunately my fond memories do not extend to the school. In particular certain teachers were more enthusiastic than others to use corporal punishment or have us suffer other indignities. In my opinion the culture at Saint Joseph's Convent School was not a learning environment where a child could thrive and reach their full potential. Hopefully the Catholic education system has changed over the years and is providing a more inclusive and supportive environment for their students so that they feel valued and respected as individuals and to nurture them in a way that aligns with the christian values of the Catholic church.
It's my daughter second week here and she loves every bit of it she says teachers are so nice and everyone takes care of each other. Thank you teachers and everyone who supports our children's growth I'm happy to know my daughter gets to grow up in a beautiful environment.
Multilingual and multicultural parish including people. good spiritual vibe. Really wonder someone comment or says in review that somebody push him or pressurized him to come church.
