Great food. We had the specials - no idea what the fish was but the waiter’s description was spot on. Service was friendly and relaxed. We had to book ahead. Other restaurants would squeeze in more covers so nice to see they hadn’t. Good selection of reasonably priced wine.
Friendly and attentive service. Limited seating and picks up at peak times. Tuna was seared perfectly and accompanied quinoa / veggies salad underneath complemented well. The special - cold platter was fresh and as a whole plate delicious. A seafood only + one meat dish restaurant and all produce was fresh and simple. For the dessert the Panna Cotta is a must!
It’s not a fancy 5 star but I’d say it’s the best in town. Good value for money that’s for sure. Catch of the day was fresh and nicely cooked. And I loved my pale ale. Really helped after a long day driving!
Bad attitude towards to tourists. When we entered the restaurant, only one table was served and we would like to seat a beautiful table for four, and she said to us "it's for five" and led us to a small square table three adults of us After a couple of minutes, I saw her led one couple and a child to that table. And the food was under expectation. The fish platter should have served for two people, however it was not even enough for one. And also the broken fish was disgusting like someone have eaten it before. So disappointed.
Friendly local restaurant with comfort atmosphere. Foods served with decent price and don't forget to try local beer.
Not sure scallops go with rosemary. Other than that, everything I cool.
Nice small cozy place near the marina with a good view of the nearby yachts good selection of wines and local craft beers. Menu has everything from steaks to seafood. Staff was very helpful and courteous. Would recommend if you're in the area.
My husband and I chose Squids over other suggestions in our guide book and so glad we did. I had Sweet Soy Salmon while my husband who loves Mussels, had the Grilled Mussel Tray. Both were excellent - a real taste sensation. The staff were most accommodating, very pleasant and helpful. Our only regret is that we tried a different restaurant the next night our last night in Whitianga.
I think the other reviews here are quite generous. Staff were inattentive. This is a seafood restaurant, so you'd expect the fish to be fresh and tasty. I had a rubbery fishcake starter. The mains consisted of a Japanese styled sesame seed encrusted fish. All I could taste was sesame seed. Also had the crispy skinned salmon. It wasn't really crispy. I'm no pro chef but I'm pretty confident I could make better myself at home.
Was just reminiscing with my buddy about our time at Squids last year. He had a shrimp pasta dish and calamari. I had a kilo of mussels served with their home made bread to soak up the sauce. It was all so good I'm writing a midnight review 13 months after the fact. We liked the beer selection but we loved their service. Certainly hope to make it back to Squids someday!
