Story

Spirit of Tasmania is one of Australia’s most iconic travel experiences, operating sailings across Bass Strait between Melbourne and Devonport on Tasmania’s north coast.

Spirit of Tasmania provides travellers with flexibility and convenience when planning a holiday. Our twin ships depart from both ports at 7.30pm and arrive the following morning at 6.00am. During peak season, we also operate day sailings departing from each port at 9.00am and arriving the same day at 6.00pm.

On board, you can experience spectacular views, delicious food, great entertainment, relaxation and so much more!

Experience the allure of sea travel. It’s fun, relaxing and stress-free. Simply drive on board for a holiday where half the fun is getting there. Embrace the ocean views, stroll the decks and breathe in the sea breeze - there’s nothing quite like it!

A very nice experience of travelling through Spirit of Tasmania across Bass Strait. Price was steep but it was school holidays and their peak season. The embarkment took a very long time but the staff was very efficient and at no time you feel left alone. Once on board there are lots of eating options from quick snacks to high class meals all at very reasonable cost. Day trips offer a lot of fun activities for all age groups. You can bring your own food and drinks and enjoy, also your reading material or board games. Highly recommended if you want to take your vehicle across the straits.

Such an economical, easy way to commute. Our family has used the Spirit of Tas on a few occasions and have really enjoyed it

Leaving Port Melbourne to Devonport with our car and return. First time experience.  Queue for boarding, long waiting time, took about 30mins to get on board. I think it is first in last out, we always get in early and both times go up to deck 6. They always called deck 3 and 5 to leave first when arrived. Loading and unloading is easy, just follow instructions, there are staffs to guide you where you need to go and park or drive out. We booked a cabin for 4, not much room to move around with bunks on each side. We brought our own snacks for dinner so can't comment on the food offering. For people like me who have motion sickness, from Melbourne to Devonport, the ride is smooth, no problem until about 3am, a little bit of bumpy waves, according to the staff, it is consider very smooth so I guess it is all good. From Devonport to Melbourne, kind of a bumpy ride, even my daughter who doesn't have motion sickness also feel not well, we all end up sleep early. Overall experience is great and fun. We took the overnight ride. Saw the sunset while leaving Melbourne and the sunrise when arrived back at Melbourne. The ride is about 9hrs. The cost of the ride is similar to air tickets with car rental for 4 but I preferred to take my own car and all my "stuff" for touring Tassie, stuff like body boards, snorkelling gears, wet suits, shoes, sandals and wet shoes. Would definitely do it again!

Please never refer to this as a cruise. It has nothing to do with it. It's only a "fancy" ferry boat. The price of going across for a car and two people is horrendous. The experience, our fourth crossing, is sub-average and it will be our last. Food (buffet/cafeteria style) is average and overpriced. Sleeping in the reclining chairs is only slightly better than sleeping in a long flight. My wife got sick just from the constant engine vibrations. Next time we will take the plane (quicker) and will rent a car, even if it will cost more at the end.

We had a day crossing with our car and caravan. It is an expensive exercise but for us a very pleasant and enjoyable experience. The loading, unloading process and the onboard staff were all friendly. It is a long day (9.5 hours on the water) but the facilities are modern and clean. Food and refreshments are of a good quality and not overpriced. Wear comfortable clothes and if not in a cabin select your base before seeking out coffee/food or exploring other activities.
