“Sleep Dentistry” or Intravenous (IV) Conscious Sedation is when a drug, usually of the anti-anxiety variety is administered into the bloodstream, resulting in a sleep like state where the patient is relaxed and totally unaware of the Dental procedure, but remains conscious throughout.
A general anaesthetic requires you to be unconscious which significantly increases the risk and recovery period.

As a result of being conscious, your ventilatory (airway) and cardiovascular functions are unaffected and therefore IV Sedation does not require you to be an inpatient at hospital. This reduces your “wait time” before the procedure and also greatly reduces the cost.

There is a very short recovery period. After 20-30 minutes you are able to comfortably go home in the company of a responsible adult, and have absolutely NO memory of your procedure.
Please remember you cannot drive or operate machinery etc for at least 48 hours.
IV Sedation is the perfect atraumatic solution when it comes to treating children. It is extremely safe and poses less risk than local anaesthetic on its own or nitrous oxide “Happy Gas”.

With a very rapid onset, about 15 seconds and no residual side effects following recovery it is the preferred choice in children for quick dental treatment, for example single tooth procedures.

Please note though the patients need to weigh in excess of 14 Kg.

The fee for the Sedation is normally $350 to $500 but this ultimately depends on the length of your procedure.

You will be supplied with a invoice/receipt which can be submitted to Medicare.
In the majority of cases Medicare will rebate over 50% of the sedation fee.

Rebates do however vary depending on individual circumstances.
