I am Japanese, a friend and I had some sushi platter for dinner. Fairly decent place as Japanese Restaurant in Sydney as most JP restaurants here are ran by Korean and Chinese, authenticity gets lost in the way. Soup was decent, I quite enjoyed. Price isn't so overwhelming. Fair, in relation to the value I was getting. Though not sure about the Wagyu, very expensive, scarce kind of Japanese beef 300g $50. I am not sure if it is REAL Wagyu. Or not. Check.
Went on a Wednesday night. Choose the sake flight, some sushi, tempura and the Sabu Cigars. The Sabu Cigars were awesome. Desserts were superb, the satsuma sorbet had an awesome bitterness to it that was spot on. Service was awesome, great waiter and when I got the sake flight I got a run through of what I was eating. Definitely going back.
Sabu Restaurant and Bar in Parramatta is something different in Church St. Sabu is now the place in Parramatta for Japanese Tapas. For Happy Hour Tapas, go on a Friday night and order between 5pm to 7pm. So Friday Night Dinner would be perfection for a bargain meal. Sabu Restaurant and Bar is not really a traditional Japanese restaurant. I would say it's more a modern fusion restaurant. 78% like rate on urbanspoon is right on the ball!!! Great work guys I ordered the King Fish Carpaccio $10 in happy hour which was not bad but I do miss the traditional flavours of zesty lemon with Carpaccio type dishes. The fish sauce for the king fish did not quite work for me and this dish is normally $16. The Karaage Chicken Roll was nice and well put together pictured below. I would recommend ordering this dish of crumbed chicken, cucumber, spicy mayonnaise and tempura crunch in a rice roll. It's normally $16 outside of happy hour. The Momo dumplings $10 in happy hour and normally $12 were steamed dumplings with wagyu mince, onion and coriander with Achar an indian pickle. They were very different and unique. I haven't had dumplings like these before. Worth a try if you like the look of them. I definitely recommend the tuna tataki salad $10 in happy hour, normally $18 which is a small portion of slightly seared tuna loin coated with sesame seeds about 7 pieces in total with soba noodles with coriander and dressing. The noodles were peanut -like and I really enjoyed all the components together. For dessert, "Snow" pictured below $16 was pistachio and matcha green tea crumbs, yuzu parfait, pistachio ice cream and pine foam. It was not bad. I would be tempted to skip dessert and go to Gelato Messina instead but for something different, I would suggest trying their desserts! Parramatta is not known for any great Japanese-Fusion Restaurants so I think Sabu is probably going to be the highlight moving forward. Check it out! Prices: $30 per person. Probably more outside of happy hour Location: 321 Church St, Parramatta
ordered takeaway for me and my son, I was told that the teriyaki chicken with rice and miso soup was a big meal enough for two people and considering the high price they charge you would expect nothing but! Went in paid and left assuming everything was at a good high standard, as that's what the restaurants appearance seemed to be like! Got in the car and the food was warm not hot! Was told 10mins, lucky for us we live just that far away if not less! Got home opened it up to the most pathetic meal I have ever seen and not even warm! The rice container was full so was the miso soup container, the very large teriyaki chicken container was that patheticly filled my 8yr old said "doesn't look like it would fill my tummy mummy and what's that yucky green stuff" he eats salad and loves pretty much most veggies what we saw was slimy soggy looking Lettus on the side at the bottom of the container and not even close to half way full of chicken! Unfortunately Our regular Japanese restaurant was closed and for the same price at anytime not just at lunch times like this place,we can get two delicious teriyaki chicken bentos with two miso soup salad and rice for the same price as this meal cost! best Japanese restaurant we have ever been to its a tiny plesent place in west ryde, well worth the drive!! All the staff greet you at the door as you walk in with big smiles all saying hello making you feel welcome and when you leave you get the same absolute kindness as you leave with big smiles and goodbyes! I guess to try a new place with less manners and food quality and being a large restaurant in beautiful condition and in a great location in parramatta you would have thought it would have had the same kind manners to they're customers and the best quality food! I guess they spent all time and money trying to make the restaurant nice looking and forgot the rest that's required for a successful restaurant! we made the most of what we got. I instantly got more annoyed as the taste of the food wasn't nice but I kept it to myself so my son would eat his dinner then my son complained and said "it has no flavour" to which he was right and the so called fresh 'salad' was slimy and gross, so that was left aside!! Then as we ate I started tasting this terrible burnt chicken maybe scrappings from the pan they cooked it in or they just burnt the chicken? after eating this we felt nauseous and I just hope to god the chicken Was cooked properly and everything was cooked to the standards every chief must cook to and we don't get sick!! My son is still hungry and I feel nauseous from eating a small amount of this food! I hope we were just unlucky and this restaurant is more well mannered with good quality food as well as the restaurant is presented! Yes, I did call soon as we got home as all I saw was a pathetic sloppy meal and my son complained straight away! when he has never complained about his favourite Japanese food, this just reassured me he could See what I saw which wasn't good food! Specially for the high price they charged us! I called she tried to say it's a small meal after telling me when ordering it's large enough for two and then quickly while being rude said "so what do you want a refund" normally I would just deal with it but this just wasn't something I could deal with so I said "yes I would like a refund " before I could say another word she hung up! she called back not long after hanging up on me and said it will take 7 days for refund and was told if it's not back into my account to call them back in 7 days so they seemed to be sorry in a way or just didn't want a Bad review! even though no apologies were given and I was spoken to rudly! I'm sure they will be offended and defensive about this but im offended annoyed that we were charged to be given rubbish or scraps after my review hope they learn to cook and nobody has to taste such bad food with bad mannered staff to top it off! This was a bad experience at a place that looks good but I guess looks can be deceiving! We will not be coming back to this place ever again!!
I've eaten here twice for lunch. The first time I got the wagyu beef bento box from the Lunch Express menu for $19. It was a good meal except the beef was over cooked which spoiled the fatty wagyu flavours. The second time was today. My 2 colleagues and I all ordered a "Main" each from the Lunch Express Menu. All the mains came out quickly and were quite tasty. Unfortunately the slow cooked pork was the size of your palm, the salmon was about the length of your hand but half the width and I got FIVE SCALLOPS in a bowl. Had to order a second meal which took my lunch to $36. Staff were defensive when we spoke to them. She brought out the bill when we didn't ask for it and tried to take my miso soup away when I was only half way through even though we were all still eating. Go figure. Probably won't come back. Ever.
Wow this has to be one of the best restaurants I have ever been to! Starting with the service, the staff were friendly and helpful, and knowledgeable about the menu. They were attentive without being pushy and made sure we didn’t have to search for anyone all night to get a drink or order the next dish. The atmosphere was intimate and relaxed even when the place started filling up and buzzing with activity. You could tell that the staff had excellent communication with each other and the customers, and the whole operation was seamless. Then we get to the food….immaculate. Simple, clean and smart, traditional meets invention, not in a show-off way just clever, tasty and beautiful. Everything down to the décor, the furniture, dishes and cutlery and the music, was aesthetically delicious and comfortable. As a fan of both The Block and Masterchef this was like a holiday on set of both shows combined lol. Very memorable and enjoyed the whole experience, will definitely go again :-
Went there not knowing what to expect. Service was quick without being annoying. I like how they didn't just dump everything you ordered on the table all at once to get rid of you like some Japanese places. Food was tasty and a little different, which was nice. Be careful ordering the Wagyu beef though. Probably 100 grams of meat for $50. All in all worth a try if you are looking for something nice, but isn't the cheapest.
only one type of sake could be bought that was hot. Cigar wafers were misleading, should have came with instructions on how to eat. Who eats a Tabasco shot with their appraiser? fairly overpriced. people on other tables looked confused about our order too. Give this place a go if your high and in need of cold sake to get pissed on a sat arvo =]
I also had low expectations for this restaurant as I've never really had good experiences from restaurants in the parramatta area, on top of that I'm not a massive fan of japanese food, but my boyfriend loves it so thought I would try it. I actually really loved the food here to my surprise! We also had really great service, we had a male waiter I forget his name, but he was really prompt and made sure we constantly had drinks, the meals also came out in a good time and we didn't feel like we were being rushed out of the place which we commonly find in busy restaurants. It's strange you had such a different review! Maybe they were having an off night. I know from when I used to work in a restaurant some nights everything would just go wrong then it sets off a domino effect! I'd suggest to go back on another night, I honestly had the best service and thought the food was amazing. Shame you didn't have the same experience.
It's a pretty fantastic restaurant. A little pricey, but the quality and the flavours make up for it. Good if you want Japanese, but want to try something a little different
