Used to be a real insider's tip but has gotten more crowded in the last few years. The path up winds through a private farmland and you are likely to meet sheep along the way. Some say that the hike is somewhat a bit one-sided, but i personally felt that due to the great view of lake Wanaka which you see all along the way it's still a great hike. And finally the view from the peak is simply breathing. You look across lake Wanaka and see into Mount Aspiring National Park as well as a good part of the Southern Alps. So overall well worth the effort if you are in town and have good weather.

Wide easy path but pretty steep slog. Like ben Nevis. Most people just go to the lookout but it’s definitely worth going to the peak. Views are beautiful and improve from the lookout. The path curls round the other side of the mountain and the peak is airy. Suitable for children in summer if they don’t get bored of the constant uphill. Takes between 3 and 8 hours depending on fitness.

The views at the top are stunning. However, the hike is nothing but back and forth switchbacks which makes for a static view of the same lake and landscape, which will become incrementally better with each step. You will never lose site of the parking lot either, which also incrementally gets smaller. The hike is completely open field and completely sunny so if you choose to go, go early morning like we did. My friend and I (especially him!) wish we had opted for a different hike than this one. If you have copious amounts of time, by all means do it. If you need to select a few great hikes and are time limited, skip this one. Reward for the amount of effort just wasn’t worth it, especially when there are other stunning hikes that are easy/moderate. On the other hand, the trail is extremely well maintained and you could do this with tennis shoes (wish I had). Challenging because of the elevation gain but the trail is not going to cause you any problems.

nice half day hike if you are trained. I did it in 4 hours incl. breaks. Untrained and/or wrong shoes will need up to 5-6 hours. There is no shadow at all, so be prepared. unfortunatly you have go back the same way. I recommend it for trail run. It is a well basic tourist way. Running shoes okay. need good grip.

Be prepared must be stressed it is literally 8km up hill to get to the top, wear good walking gear (shorts, shirt and at least runners) and we found about 1.5L of water each to be enough (warm December day). With that out the way it was excellent! Getting to the top is such an achievement and the views are awesome! It took us about 2.5 hours to get up and about 2 getting down. Also there is s small donation of $2 per person just as you start for track maintenance, I saw many people not do this but for what you get it's a small price to pay.
