Pravda

About

Pravda translates to mean “The Truth”. And nothing could be more honest about Wellington's coffee culture than this cafe, bar and bistro.

Story

Set in the heart of the city, Pravda Café & Grill is a Wellington institution; the perfect place to go for everything from a morning espresso to a leisurely lunch, afternoon drink or dinner out.

In Russian, Pravda means “the truth”. Hence the eatery’s focus on honest, produce-led dishes that use the very best ingredients New Zealand has to offer. The daytime menus offer flavourful café favourites given a modern spin, along with freshly ground Immigrant’s Son coffee. The cheese scones are world-famous in Wellington, while the breakfast and lunch dishes run the gamut from contemporary egg dishes to innovative salads, burgers and sandwiches, and bistro classics.

By night, Pravda is Wellington’s best steakhouse, with a carefully curated selection of exceptional cuts, informed by the menu at Pravda’s siblings, the iconic Jervois Steak House restaurants. Executive chef Gareth Stewart sources red meat of the highest quality, and alongside the grill offering is a modern bistro menu, with dishes that offer something for everyone.

Pravda delivers European sophistication to the Wellington café and restaurant scene. The heritage building is atmospheric by day or night, with vaulted high ceilings, crystal chandeliers and expanses of marble and dark wood. Generous windows allow light to flood in, and a sense of elegance imbues the space.

Pravda is the quintessential Wellington cafe and restaurant, serving fantastic food and excellent coffee, complemented by an exceptional wine list. At Pravda, a warm welcome always awaits you.

Delicious dinner, beautiful interior with a romantic feeling. Perfect for date night or dinner with friends. Service was great, supised how large the meals were, we couldn't fit dessert. Delicious cocktails. You can order some wines by the half glass which is perfect if your driving. Not alot on offer if you don't eat meat but wasn't an issue for us. Will definitely be back.
After all the hype, I was somewhat disappointed by the service and Cheese Scone. But also because they said if I wanted my Scones toasted, I'd need to wait 30mins. So it was microwaved instead and that just didn't do justice to the supposedly award-winning Scone. Also tried their Orange and Almond Pistachio Cake. Good texture but too sweet.
We came first time here, using first table website. First man who bring us to sit table, he was so gently and nice but who did service to us was a bit Rush customer service. One of us was still eating, could wait a bit more until both of us finish eating then clean dishes. Sadly, We felt rush to eat. We had Casar Salad and Fried Squid as entree. For main, we had market fish it was blue cod with miso sauce and roast veges and Taupo Beef eyefillet steak with Truffle béarnaise sauce. Foods were lovely, especially I loved the Truffle béarnaise sauce and also the way of how they cooked blue cod was perfect. Soft and fluffy with crispy skin. Very nice. We had Tiramisu as dessert but its not real tiramisu. Its like cake taste like very sweet cake with coffee liquor so wasnt expecting for me. Overall, Good price by using first table. Nice food except dessert. Hopefully the waiter could let customer more relax to eat, not rushing to eat.
Lovely ambiance, great hospitality thank you Dex! and incredible food. Our night out exceeded our expectations! Lovely fresh & tempura oysters, beef tartare a wee bit of hot sauce is added, which we loved!, beautiful steaks and some lovely sides fries, cos salad and carrots - we’d all order it again tomorrow if we could.
Really enjoyed the express lunch and Wellington on a Plate cocktail. We also went on Valentine's Day, completely unplanned and got a window seat near the bar. They had pink roses on the tables and a special menu! We loved it.
One Wellington thing that we were advised we "must do" was a cheese scone from Pravda Cafe. Indoor seating was at a premium so we braved the outdoor tables and ordered a coffee and a cheese scone. The cheese scone was generous and delicious!! The coffee was also great. Friend staff. Kid-friendliness: Not really. Parking: Street parking. Wheelchair accessibility: Accessible if there's a table downstairs. But squeezy.
It was hard to make a reservation given pre Christmas parties and gatherings, but we got in at around 8 place closes at 9:30. Watermelon salad was refreshing but I would prefer more feta cheese in it. Lamb rump steak was made to perfection. Their a-La Pavlova cake was actually better than some other places “true Pavlova”.
Elegant and opulent cafe/restaurant/bar. We only popped in for a coffee but thoroughly enjoyed the coffee they use local beans from Mount Victoria and the atmosphere while in there. The staff who served us was lovely and the wait times were minimal. We will be back to try the restaurant.
This steak house is just amazing, the food was delicious, staff were on point and the whole environment was super Wheelchair accessibility: Only to the front bar part, not upstairs
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Pravda Cafe & Grill and was blown away by the experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a cozy interior that felt like a home away from home. The food was absolutely incredible. Every dish we ordered was beautifully presented and expertly prepared, with a focus on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the Kagoshima A5 which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The service was also exceptional. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and had great recommendations for both food and drink. Despite the restaurant being busy, we never felt rushed or neglected. The only downside to our experience was the wait time. Pravda Cafe & Grill is a popular spot, and we had to wait a bit for a table. However, the staff kept us updated on our wait time and made sure we were comfortable while we waited. Overall, I would highly recommend Pravda Cafe & Grill for anyone looking for a delicious meal in a cozy atmosphere. The wait times may be a bit long, but in my opinion, it's a testament to how popular and well-regarded this restaurant is. I would give it a 5 out of 5 stars without hesitation.
