I visited Parliament of South Australia with my two children ages 7 and 8. We had a wonderful time where we enjoyed the stunning architecture and learning about the different houses and the interesting history of Parliament. My sons most memorable moment was hearing about the speaker's getting a maze to protect themselves because in the Medieval times speakers they were often beheaded for being the bearer of bad news. We also got the opportunity to sit in at question time which was fascinating watching the way that the parties debated against each other. Overall it was a great experience and will definitely take the children again when they get older so that they can continue to learn.
This is a very beautiful building and very we maintained. The columns are very tall. The building is easily visible from any view point in the street. The trees at the front give it a very special aspect that blends with nature and stone. Full of history. Worth walking last when you're in the vicinity.
Great experience overall with the upper and lower house chambers for Youth Parliament! The staff make amazing sandwiches, the bathrooms were clean, the art was impeccable and most importantly, I learnt that the Honourable Peter Malinauskas keeps and uses Nivea Strawberry Shine lip balm in his desk.
Very well organised guided tours. I enjoyed doing a themed tour about women's suffrage. The information is well researched and very interesting. Hope to come back and do a different theme next year.
Beautiful architecture and worth visiting if you have an interest in history and politics.
Beautiful building. Free public tours available. Must book first. Paintings, books and of course the upper and lower houses are worth seeing. So much history. Natalie was a great guide.
We stumbled upon this ornately decorated building on the way to the light rail. As it turns out, public tours were over. The guard said we could browse around the rotunda within his view, but no more further unfortunately. Lucky for us, a government official overheard all this and told the guard that he would personally give us a tour. Highlights- we saw two chambers where laws are considered and voted upon. We also saw where the Queen of England sat during her official visit a few years ago. It was a bit of a rushed tour, because the gentleman did not have a lot of time. But hey, we were very happy to get any tour whatsoever. Also humbled and appreciative that he went out of his way to help us on his own initiative and generosity. After this whirlwind tour, we made our way to the light rail and headed back to our cruise ship. Someone tapped me on the shoulder and said hello. I did not recognize him. Then it occurred to me- this is the official that gave us the tour. He said that is why he only had a few minutes, he needed to catch the train. All in all, the buildings are quite a sight, as well as the interior legislative chambers. But most of all, we remember the people of Australia. The gentleman represents Australia fabulously.
My rating is based on the lack of information. We checked the opening hours and guided tour info on their website. It says that weekdays, guided tours are proivded at 10am and 2pm on the weekdays. No specific info about closure of the place. Went there, no signs on the door or entrance saying whether the place is closed. Rang couple of numbers and found the place is closed until 5th of Jan 2020. I am not complaining about having a break. But it is very annyoing that we did our homework and got there on time and trying to find any info about the opening hours etc in the 39 degree heat... I have to say it was really annoying. I am very disappointed at the lack of professionalism of thouse mainintaining the websites of the parliament of SA OR the signage of such information!
Situated on North Terrace, The Parliament House is South Australia’s state legislative seat. This is actually the newer building as the Old Parliament House has become too small for their use. The architecture of the building seems to have been inspired from other great halls in other parts of the commonwealth, with large Greek columns dominating the facade of the exterior. Behind the Parliament house is a large park you can enjoy walking around towards the river.
The building is much bigger than it looks on the outside and has many interesting rooms you can see on the tour. The floorboards are a bit squeaky, but probably are older than I am.
