The Paekakariki Station Museum was advertised as being opened on Saturdays and Sundays. Unfortunately, it was closed on the Saturday when we visited. It appears to be closed as it's still undergoing earthquake strengthening. However, the 1915 South End Signal Box was open. Though the Signal Box is now a gallery. The Paekakariki Station had two signal boxes - one at the south end and one at the north end. The signal box system was discontinued in 1985 which was replaced by a remote control system. Fortunately, the signal box was restored by the community and is now registered a Category I by New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
I enjoyed my visit, very interesting history of Paekakariki, the staffer I met had local and historical knowledge, 5 stars for a well presented museum and the work that has been done to restore the railway station, I have memories of visiting this station in the days of steam for a railway pie and hot cuppa tea.
Good run down on local history. Maori history as well as the military camp and railway
Great for local history with focus on trains
Nice view into the past and the USA connection to the area. Kids liked it too!
Lot about history of the area. Great place to visit.
A classic museum. Beautifully kept in a train station. Lovely helpful people as well.
Check the hours and be gentle with the volunteers and you'll have a great experience!
An unexpected gem. Lots of local history, not just railway related.
Interesting place lots of history here
