Story

A great place to connect with New Zealand's native wildife, especially Kiwi ( Kiwi are always on display in our Nocturnal Houses). We were the first Kiwi House in NZ to display & breed kiwi for release back back into the wild. Not-for-profit organisation at the heart of NZ conservation since 1971.
Large collection of native birds, plus reptiles (tuatara & geckoes).

What a nice surprise! The birds are lively, active, and very good energy. The blue ducks stood up on water and flipped their wings as if they were dancing! And make sure you check the kiwi feeding times and be there for it. They were cute and very active. One of the kiwis there is a Spotted Kiwi, the biggest captivity kiwi in the whole of New Zealand.

Great place. Time your visit to see kiwi feeding to make the most of it, though with the inverted day night cycle they run you have a good chance to see one or several anyway. The gigantic walk through aviary is amazing, you could literally spend hours just wandering around and even interacting with some of the birds directly.

After not being able to visit the glow worm caves, since we were already in the area, we had to go see something. The whole time we kept hearing about Kiwi's and we thought everyone was talking about the fruit. Until we realized it's one of the country's famous birds. This place has a sanctuary for the birds. Unfortunately, it wasn't until we got here that we learned they are nocturnal animals. So the place where they are is completely dark and you cannot take pictures. Pretty cool to see some of them in real life. The people who work here are very knowledgeable and overall they have a lot of other animals to see. They gave us bird feed and the birds flocked to us. If you don't have time this is something you could definitely skip.

Not the kiwi house itself but the caravan park that is now under new management.   An excellent place to stay.  Spotlessly clean everything you need quiet and peaceful little passing traffic.  Friendly manager . Not 0n site though.  Dog friendly and close to town.

Haven't been for years so was disappointed that nocturnal house SO dark could only just  work out there was a fluffy kiwi bum by the window!! Was patient waiting for the eyes to adjust but it just did not work and saw nothing at all in the night house. Have been to other kiwi houses in NZ and have been able to clearly see them. Delighted to see Kereru  at very close range in the aviary and fun and interesting to see the eel feeding.
