A super fun little experience, seeing all the different birds was really neat. The kiwi rooms were super dark and hard to see but we got some glimpses of the kiwi. The aviary was really cool, walking around with the birds flying all around you.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone passing through town. The place is run by a non-profit and they help reinstate the Kiwi population throughout the country. We went in May so there weren't many people. We got to see a Kiwi! I would also advise attending a talk with the keeper about Kiwi. It was really interesting and we learned a lot about Kiwi and the role this place plays in the survival of the species.
March 2026nnWe spent a wonderful three hours in the park and booked the “Behind the Scenes” tour with Tyler. He was energetic, engaging, and full of fascinating stories about the preserve and its founders - we completely lost track of time and walked with him almost 1.5 hours instead of 45 minutes!nnWe saw kiwis, beautiful birds, geckos, and eels. The highlight was a clever tui bird that mimics the owner’s voice. Thank you for such a memorable experience!

Really appreciate their work in researching and preserving. However, as a tourist, I'd not reccommend this place. Could not spot any animal other than the ducks which were lovely as they sat orderly on a log. Almost every animal enclosure we saw was empty, and dirty.nnThe kiwi talk lasts for 15 minutes, very informative. But yes, its very hard to spot the kiwi in the dark.nnUnfortunately, was not a good experience overall.
