I’ve been coming to the Preston Mosque Umar bin Al-Khattab for a while now, and it truly feels like the heartbeat of the Northern Suburbs community.nnWhat stands out immediately is the incredible history here—it's one of Melbourne’s oldest large-scale masjids built in the 70s, but the recent developments and the new ISV branding show how much they are looking toward the future.nnThe architecture, especially the minaret and dome, is iconic, but it’s the atmosphere inside that keeps you coming back.nFor the sisters, the upstairs section is one of the best I’ve seen in Melbourne.nnIt’s spacious, incredibly clean, and the screens to see the Sheikh make you feel included in the service rather than tucked away. If you have kids, the community language school they’ve run since ’76 is top-tier; the Saturday/Sunday Arabic and Islamic studies classes are a local staple.nnA few 'insider' highlights:nn• The Cafe & Bookshop: There’s a lovely little cafe area downstairs where the proceeds go to charity. It’s a great spot to grab a coffee and browse the English/Arabic bookstore.nn• Services: They offer so much more than just the five daily prayers—there’s a health clinic, refugee support, and even interactive school tours.nn• The Khutbah: I really appreciate that the Friday Khutbah is delivered in Arabic followed by a clear English translation, making it accessible for everyone.nnParking can get a bit tight during Jummah which is expected given 1,000+ brothers and sisters attend, but the vibe is always respectful and organized. Whether you’re coming for prayer or just want to learn more about Islam through their outreach programs, this is a welcoming, peaceful, and beautifully maintained space.nnMasha’Allah, a true credit to the Islamic Society of Victoria ISV committee.
Amazing welcoming space. Its a great example of what mosques need to be. As I entered I saw one lady being guided by another of proper tajweed for recitation. Upstairs classes were going on before the maghreb prayer and I all wanted at the time was to be a part of them a way or another.nThe architecture of the mosque is exquisite and the space is very serene with well maintained ablution and toilets with bidets.
This masjid is a true blessing for the local community and the wider Ummah. Beyond being a peaceful and beautifully maintained place of worship, it serves as a vital hub for spiritual growth, education, and social support. The dedication of the leadership and volunteers in providing services that cater to all ages is remarkable. It’s heartening to see such a vibrant environment that truly embodies Islamic values of hospitality and unity. May Allah reward everyone involved in running this wonderful centre!
Very beautiful and big mosque and reachable with a tram line. It has café for coffee or lunch there. Come early for your Friday prayer so you can be inside the first floor or second.
Sadly l rate with 1 star, reason being l felt the mosque has lost its 'beauty' with being very greedy re marriages, $400 for a nikah +another $400 if your wanting it to be a legal marriage, seriously that is outrageous, when l 1st wrote an email inquiring about a nikah, the reply was ,there was no charge, & only allowed a few people plus the only food was allowed was some fruit or sweet biscuits, which l myself wasent going to have, l thought WOW that great, the nikah as such was 'free' but nooo when l spoke to the marriage celebrant, he said $400 + another $400 if l wanted a legal marriage, $800, is pretty steep, when a wedding in itself can cost $1000's, but he'd do it for $715, very kind, plus the fact he'd sent the intention of marriage form via email, l said ld be happy to come to the mosque to fill out said forms, but noo, anyway ld filled out the form as one must apply for this one month before the actual marriage, meanwhile l was waiting for said marriage celebrant to make make some kind of contact, but noo, he'd gone overseas, hence l cancelled it all. I myself always though the Preston mosque was the best one, well it was while Sheikh Fehmi Naji El-Imam was around, but not anymore, lve been to the mosque & sadly felt it has lost its 'beauty' its more of a business now, btw while l did speak to the marriage celebrant l found him to be rude kinda it was just too much to want to help a sister out in her time of need, hence lve gone to another mosque, & will say l rate that mosque 5 stars, the iman there was extremely helpful & kind & hence they will be the one to perform both nikah & legal marriage, in closing, the Preston mosque needs a good cleaning, it has a pungent smell, not very inviting to pray to say the least
