This is one of my favourite places in Sydney. It would be great if dogs on leash were allowed. Whether you drive, walk or ride a bike up to the North Head Sanctuary, Manly, it is well worth it. Plan to spend some time here and Bella Vista cafe offers views with great food and coffee. Beware of the native birds trying to steal your food though!

A word of advice from a local: you can walk along the scenic drive, but there are a number of traffic-free internal roads and tracks to the east. You will get more shade, see more wildlife and also get better views, if you follow the dotted-line track shown on the map, the one that comes out at the Third Cemetery. This is a steel track, so you will often find lizards beneath it. There are two roads going off at an angle on the left as you walk along. The second one is North Fort Road: walk up that, watching out for cars. When you get to the sculpture gallery, look for a sandy track on the right: after 100 metres, this becomes a raised steel mesh track. Look for side branches that lead two viewpoints. When the steel ends, you are on a fire trail, with the Third Cemetery just over the road, great views there as well. Watch out for bikes. When you are done, go east down the hill and rejoin the main road to get to North Head, after passing the Information Centre (call in!) and Bella Vista (good coffee, yummy cakes, great views). If you have a map (they are available near entry points and at the information centre), there are plenty of other roads and tracks, as you can see on Google Maps. MOST of them are blocked against cars, but you may find bikes and the occasional slow-moving service vehicles, but you are MUCH safer than on the roads. If you walk on the roadside, go single file on the RIGHT, so you are facing the oncoming traffic. The general rule in Australia is keep left, except when you are a pedestrian on a narrow road. This is my playground as a bush regeneration volunteer. I love it, and hope you will as well. Please don't leave any bloodstains behind.
