Story

New Theatre was born from a democratic voice and from the very beginning we’ve done things our way.

We’re not slick, we’re not refined and we don’t conform. We believe in artistic and social expression, not just escapism. When we take the stage, we’re for real.

Our doors are open to everyone – from those looking for their start, to those who never want it to end.

We’re a beacon for social movement; a hub for local enthusiasts. We’re driven by passion, not money.

We’re not interested in awards or accolades, we act out of love.

You can’t define us or second guess us. We won’t just invite you to take a seat, we invite you to take part.

And we’ll always stay true to what we do.

Always real. Always raw. Always New.

"New Theatre's ability to showcase as well as nurture both mainstream and fringe elements of theatre is a rare gift to be treasured by the Australian arts community." - Inner West Courier

"New Theatre has an admirable tradition of staging plays that commercially focused companies wouldn't touch." - Time Out Sydney

In 2007, New Theatre was honoured by the National Institute of Dramatic Art for its contribution to the Australian Performing Arts and 75 years of continuous production.

New Theatre is a non-professional theatre company and participation is on a voluntary basis. To become a member or to volunteer for our Front of House team, just visit the website NEWTHEATRE.ORG.AU

Small theatre with large heart. Very entertaining show. Great actors and actresses, musicians and singers. Would highly recommend for a night out.
A cool small local theatre that punches above its weight size . Have seen a few wonderful performances here and the smaller theatre makes for a more upclose and personal experience.
Great theatre in Sydney, our version of “off Broadway” with interesting plays and an intimate feel. Currently here watching The Lovely Bones and really recommend it - great production, great acting! Especially by Detective Fennerman who is amazing
We saw - Things I Know to be True. It was fabulous. The season runs until 17 December 2022. See it if you can. We loved it. The theatre is great. Comfortable and welcoming. Enjoy a drink before the show.
A nice establishment that provides a comfortable theatre experience. I enjoyed my time watching a show here recently. Comfortable seats, quick service, nice people behind the bar and in management. The only issue I'll add is that it was quite warm in the theatre, and two air conditioners were off. It wasn't just me, a lot of discussion at intermission about how warm it was was overheard. A small issue that is easily rectified!
We saw “All my sons” - fantastic show
Great, intimate theatre where you can see the actors' face close up. They always have quality productions with good casts and crews.
Rolicking theatrical performance for a crazy enjoyable night out.
I'm a professional theatre reviewer and most of my experiences here at New Theatre have been wonderful. Very friendly and helpful FOH staff and the stage itself is quite large with good seating options. I just think that it would be good to have an option for complimentary water at the bar as it's quite a walk from Newtown station and am often quite parched by the time I get there.
New Theatre in King Street, Newtown never disappoints. One can be guaranteed a thoughtful, provocative, engaging piece of theatre on every occasion. "Breaking the Code" is a play about Alan Turing, the brilliant mathematician who contributed to solving the Enigma Code used by the Germans, thus shortening the war. He was also "gay" at a time when it wasn't okay to be so. A hero to the war effort, he was an outcast from conventional society.
