The menu on their website was incorrect when we went which was disappointing and they were also out of lamb gnocchi which was another disappointment. I had the chicken pasta which had great flavours but the pasta was a bit hard and the addition of the pancetta seemed like an unnecessary afterthought. The polenta chips were great as were the potato's although the online menu advertised duck fat potato's but they werent. Good drink options, Aperol spritz was great. The service was also really good.
Wah, wah, wee!! Monte Cervino is a perfect slice of kiwi-born Italian experience. Recently renovated, both bar and dining room have a cool feel that sees crowds last till midnight. Bartenders in uniform moustaches know their Italian wines as well as their kiwi craft beers. The true triumph of Monte Cervino is the menu. The skill and accessibility of these matter pieces is phenomenal. The risotto comes with innovative coffee and beer undertones speaking uniquely to New Zealanders' love of both. Small plates from the burnt broccoli to spiced lamb meatballs and truly delicious wild tomato salad, there are plenty of food options to sate casual diners. A true masterpiece at Monte Cervino is the wine list. Embracing New Zealand and Italian vinos, the spectrum across red, white, rosé and orange is brilliantly complementary without duplication. Beers range the simple Italian stalwarts like Peroni and venture to Garage Project's most recent weird-and-wonderful White Mischief Peach Sour Ale. Glass, Carafe, or Bottle all available, as are non-alcoholic wines. Monte Cervino is only lacking in a little service. This will surely be tightened up as it learns is trade and the waitresses learn a sense of urgency - and how to charm kiwi patrons. Go here immediately. Sit in the window looking glamorous with ya wine and fancy food. And enjoy the possibilities presented by the menu - I'll definitely be going back soon.
It was fine. Food was tasty - but we’ve had better. EG the risotto was nice, but it only had rice and cheese and was flavoured with beer and coffee - no other meats or veges added. The spiced meatballs weren’t very spicy. The charred broccoli was nice. That was enough to fill us up - the serving sizes were good. My first TWO wine choices from the wine list were out of stock - so the waitress had to come back for a third time to get my order. The waitress we had was as new. She was polite and obliging, but wasn’t able to answer any questions about the menu - which is important when some food descriptions are in Italian. The restaurant was very noisy. The decor wasn’t as nice as the photos we saw in an online review. We prefer Ombra for similar food and a better ambiance.
Service was very slow for us, despite arriving very early, prior to the rush. Our waitress wasn't the greatest but she was new so management should have kept a better eye on her. After complaining to the manager we did get a couple of our meals comp'd but we found out he gave her a stern telling off which isn't appropriate considering he should've been monitoring her more carefully and allowed her to operate in a smaller service area. Pizza was delicious but the mains left a lot to be desired - pasta was undercooked and flavours weren't anything to write home about. I had very high hopes for this place and was sad to have such an experience. Lots of people were waiting for tables and were not accommodated in a timely fashion. Hopefully it improves but I won't be back any time soon.
What a night! Yum yum and more yum. It is obvious this fabulous restaurant understands food and service. Honestly it was faultless Great vibe. Warm and super friendly. Do not hesitate to give it a try you will not regret it. This is our new favourite and I cannot wait to go back. Thank you Monte Cervino for making our night with our friends perfect.
These guys we totally full we werent expecting a table it being a friday night at about 8pm, but thought wed try anyway ..just our luck a table had just left so we were seated right away. Nice atmosphere, warm and vibrant. The food was Delicious and fresh. Mate those garlic beans thoo!! So good polenta chips, orange tiramisu and rosemary cocktail were the highlights for me will 110% be back !!! 10/10
Not good, we arrived at 6.15 received our pizza at 7.35. asked on two occasions when we could expect our meal, when they finally came, one did not have cheese and one did not have pine nuts even though they were on the menu. The other sides we ordered were bland, tasteless. I was not impressed.
Sloppy service and food was slow. Very noisy restaurant.
Had really high hopes for this restaurant and it failed to deliver. Being in NZ’s top 100 restaurants I was expecting food quality to compare to some of my other favourites on the list Amano in Auckland, Coco’s Cantina in Auckland or Social Kitchen in New Plymouth. The asparagus was soggy and over cooked, the lamb gnocchi dish was like something from a bad 90’s bistro with rubbery dry lamb that lacked flavour or seasoning. The polenta chips were the worst dish of the night - huge flavourless chunks of unseasoned polenta with a tiny bit of sauce. Really really disappointed. It only gets 2 star because the focaccia with ricotta was nice and they had an impressive drinks menu although very few non-alcoholic options.
Food and server were good, with a good wine selection too. But the atmosphere isn't great and it's way too noisy, we could barely hear each other talk.
